|Here's an exciting topic I don't think has been covered before. A couple of questions:

1. I've only ever known of two petrol stations in Wotton, Bear Street Garage and the one in Gloucester Street whose name I have forgotten and was demolished maybe 10 years ago. Have there ever been any other petrol stations in the town, and if so, where abouts? Two seems a very small number to have had, especially when compared with somewhere like Tetbury which I believe used to have five of them. I suppose Tetbury is on a much busier main road. Ignore that comparison then.

2. I was wondering about the Independence Day thing on 4th July, as mentioned elsewhere, where we are encouraged to buy at least one item from local, independent shops. I assume Bear Street Garage itself is locally owned, but Shell of course isn't, it's a giant multinational with a shamefully long list of human rights, apartheid-busting and environmental controversies to its name. I hate buying Shell petrol, but I hate buying any petrol so that's no help. Can I buy my petrol in Bear Street with a clear conscience on 4th July, or indeed on any other day? Am I helping a local business or just giving my money to a vast and evil corporation?

|Maybe you could plan your petrol purchasing activities so as to avoid an actual fillherup trip on the day. I realise that's all a bit simplistic, but it would remove you from the horns of your current dilemma.

I can only ever remember there being two petrol stations in Wotton, going back to the early 70s. 1970s, before anyone decides to be smart.

|I remember the Gloucester Street garage when I first came to Wotton. I think it was The Wotton Motor Centre. They were a Subaru dealer and then sold Tata vehicles.

@Chand - a vast and evil corporation I think! Wherever you but your fuel from, it's going to come from, or be handled by the big oil companies. I'm afraid I rarely buy my petrol at Bear Street as they are usually at least 2p a litre more expensive than the Shell garage in Nailsworth and as I work in Nailsworth, it's no contest.

I often think that the Bear Street prices reflect the monopoly position they enjoy - if they can get away with a few pence per litre extra then they do. Some would say that is good business - profit while you can, just like Tesco who change their prices to reflect the position of the outlet. I prefer the Morrison's model of same prices everywhere.

It's late now so I won't start a rant on fuel prices - leave that for another day... grin

|It was actually called Wotton Motor House when it was built in the late 50's/early 60's and it was then a Ford dealership. I used to live in a house which used to stand where the garage was built. There was another garage which served petrol, it was called ROBERTS and it was on the junction of Lisle Place and Ellencroft Road. That was when I was a boy!! A long time ago!! The owner had a Triumph Renown! or was it a Mayflower.??

|Thanks everyone - very interesting info. Four petrol stations identified now; are there any more out there?

I've just done a Google search under H H Lewton, and found not only a picture on this site's gallery but also the original sign for sale at an auction in Newent. Who knows where the sign is now, although it's nice to know it's been kept and looked after.

No petrol in Synwell then? I have to say I'm disappointed.
