Mar 14th 2003 21:21 Report Abuse | | Invincible Shogun King says: I still think they could choose better areas to develop in, maybe some wasteland thats good to noone, and not pretty green fields that have been around for centuaries.
When I was younger, some people bought the fields near Hack Mill and used them for horses, as kids we used to love playing there in the summer and sledging in the winter, or picking blackberries with my mum in the autumn. Now it has barbed wire all round it. Hey ho, at least they didn't concrete it over. |

Mar 14th 2003 22:59 Report Abuse | | Miked D says: The lighting round Renishaws pales into insignificance compared to the mega-lumen mercury flood-lamps in the Co-op car-park!
From Wotton Hill or the viewpoint up Old London Road, these dazzling beacons completely drown out every other light source for miles around, and destroy any chance of seeing all but the brightest stars. Why are they lighting up such a larger area? |

Mar 14th 2003 23:18 Report Abuse | | Invincible Shogun King says: I used to be able to see Venus from my bedroom, but its much too cloudy now. Fortunatly my window faces east so I don't have the mass of lights to the south that ruin my view! |

Mar 27th 2003 20:56 Report Abuse | | Dave Madden says: There seems to be a lot of concern over the fact that Renishaws is a succesful local business that is employing a lot of local people, obviously adding money into the local economy (tax being just one area) and when looking to expand the business ARE doing it also locally....... This is surely better than Mr Renishaw taking his business to the more internationally friendly, cheaper, better conected areas of the UK such the Thames valley.
With regards to the new buildings that are being proposed.. Do you honestly think that the planning authorities will allow the building of structures that are not in keeping with the current stack..... And is there a history of Mr Renishaw building horrible buildings at this site?
I do not work for Renishaw, I do not work in the Measurement Engineering field but I do deal with Architects and Planners all day every day and I feel happy that when I drive home from Bristol every night that the grounds are kept spick and span the main house looks fantastic in its uplit format..... My 5 year old son believes that Father Christmas lives there and that all year he is making toys for all the kids around the world.
Invincible Shogun King needs to remember that many years ago there was a field or a stream or a hole or something other than his or her house....... Times change and we need to change with them.... We should not stand still and we should not fear change...We should embrace change as long as it is for the better. If this means that keeping a large business local by granting planning permission for some extra manufacture so bit.
I had to have an Archeologist on site when my foundations where being dug for my conservatory...... How easy do you think it will be for renishaws to put something nasty in place?
Anyway I'm off my soap box now. |

Mar 28th 2003 20:46 Report Abuse | | santas little helper says: Well first there is no Mr Renishaw, the name of the company was bought off the shelf many years ago, it could be called anything really. Locals are employed in some posts, but most significant workers, deeply inportant to the running of the plant come in from very far and wide, no disrespect to the locals, but this is a highly trained work force. Renishaw employes can sometimes be seen eating in the local cafes in Wotton but its a a long walk to town and theres nowhere to park, so most eat in the wonderful subsidised cafe on site, and ive never had to wait in line behind a Renishaw employe in any Wotton shop bank or petrol station, you can spot them by the way, name tags on chains round necks. And yes I do think that the last batch of building work was a mistake the roof is made of a silver reflective material, and when the sun shines it can be seen for miles. The lighting is to bright all around the site, although I admit the main building looks wonderful. Just keep these guys in check, Wotton would see no difference tomorrow if Renishaw was not here, I remember the mill long befor Renishaws bought it, and I can promise you there were more shops open in the high st, same amount of scools, people just as friendly, or grumpy, and Harold still had his dressing gown. Wotton was here a thousand years ago, may still be in a thousand to come, but if Renishaw build on many more fields, they certainly wont. All the best Oh and father Christmas does live there. |

Mar 28th 2003 23:49 Report Abuse | | Scott aka Former ISK says: Yes, well I know my house used to be a field, but the houses here have adequate parking, not requiring special roundabouts, and the people who live here don't clog up the roads as they were designed for the volume of traffic, unlike the tatty road that runs up to Wotton from down there now. And yes, Wotton wouldn't be any different if they moved elsewhere, as u rightly say a lot of their staff are moved in from afar, an example on this site even. The locals only work there as they feel obliged to, and some can't be bothered to look outside the town anyway. |

Mar 29th 2003 06:54 Report Abuse | | Kids woke me up early says: Good on you Dave - some people don't want wotton to change once they live here. The 'I've got my house on Parklands, Bearlands, Shepherds Leaze, Court Orchard brigade'. Many of us remember the town before these developments were even built and yes Wotton was a different place then and it will be different in the future. This town will die if business isn't allowed to grow, albeit, in a checked manner.
There is much jealousy in this area of anyone who does well for themselves and this is the case not just for Renishaw but for some other businesses that dare to make a profit.
As for Renishaw employing locals perhaps Mr Sykes could let us know how many are from the locality. I do know many of the employees certainly attended KLB but can no longer afford to live in the area, I think these should still be counted. |

Mar 29th 2003 07:00 Report Abuse | | Kids won't let me go back to bed says: Santas little helper - Can I just correct you, Harold was not wearing his dressing gown prior to Renishaw existing. He was a rather friendly, if a lttle eccentric, gentleman living in Kingswood who wore normal-ish clothes. He has only adopted the dresing gown in the last 10 years or so. |
