The 6th Annual Remembrance Sunday Brunch

Sunday 9th November 2014 at Charfield Memorial Hall

You are again invited to come to the Memorial Hall from 9.45am on Remembrance Sunday to have a bite to eat, a drink and a chat with your neighbours, friends and family. At about 10.40 we'll walk up Wotton Road to the war memorial to observe the 2 minute silence and laying of poppy wreaths, organised by the Parish Council. For this and the coming 4 years, it will be particularly poignant and relevant as we will mark the centenary of the sacrifice of those for whom the memorial was first erected. This act of remembrance is now much broader; it is for those who attend to have their own thoughts and pay their own respects to all who have been affected by conflict. Sadly, the list grows longer by the day. If you haven't joined in before, please do come along. It feels so much more meaningful to mark the two minute silence with your neighbours. Walking up Wotton Road together is deeply moving and the silence seems more deep and eloquent in larger numbers.

Sadly, no-one answered the plea for help (for a BBQ and manpower) in the last newsletter, so we have to drop the bacon this year. [Sigh]. See below for new choices. Give as much as you like – all food profits will be donated to Help for Heroes, a charity which continues to ensure that money goes quickly either direct or via other relevant charities to those who need it.
Over the years you have raised £2,577.

DETAILS:

Who:The Memorial Hall committee are the hosts and the team from CHADRA will again do the legwork. The Parish Council is in charge of the parade and service at the war memorial.
When:From 9.45am to 10.40am, Sunday 9th November.
Enjoy:A ham bagel OR pork sausage in a roll served with tea, coffee or squash. We can even run to a fried egg for vegetarians. Just let us know!
Pay:£2.50 each (or more if you like).
Why:To participate in an important event in the village's calendar and raise funds for Help for Heroes charity.
This fund raising event is registered with the Help For Heroes charity.

How to order:

Please give your name, address, and phone number, and say how many ham bagels, sausages in a roll, or egg sarnies you wish to have. You will then be catered for, come rain or shine, frost or snow, and we will require your payment whether you turn up or not! (Yes, we will chase it!)
Do it now before you forget! See you there!

Many, many thanks.
Your CHADRA Committee

Note From The New Editor of CHADRA

Having lived in the village for a mere 11 years I know that I am a relative newcomer, compared to those of you who have read this newsletter for decades! However, I'd like to take this opportunity of introducing myself to all readers of CHADRA and to thank the outgoing Editor, Isabel Davies for all the hard work she has put in over the last 5 years, which has been much appreciated by all.

News From Your Local Councillor

The most prominent topic in Charfield at this time (although not on a par with the Scottish referendum but probably just as important to us) is the two major sites planning applications that have been refused by the council: the development of a 60 bed care home and 31 houses on land adjacent to Charfield Primary School and the development of 106 houses on the land known as Charfield Green. 80th of these applications have now gone to appeal to be decided by the Government's Planning Inspectorate. The Council refused both of the applications, as they were outside the settlement boundary of Charfield and were not compliant with the Core Strategy which was adopted by the Council last December.

At this time, one will be a hearing and the other will be a public inquiry and it was hoped that they would be heard in close proximity to each other. The reason being that the developers will be challenging the appeals on the same subject (which is the five year land supply for housing). This was agreed as part of the Core Strategy so that the Council could place development and new communities where they are required and not where the speculative developers choose. There are differing methods of calculating the five year land supply and this will be debated by the legal teams in front of the Planning Inspector. If successful, the developers would expect to get a presumption in favour of sustainable development, although we will still be arguing that Charfield is not a sustainable location for these developments.

You may recall last year that we almost lost the 311 bus service as the operator had deemed it unviable. We were able to achieve a cross border funding subsidy for a year and I said that I would monitor the situation over the year. I am pleased to be able to give some good news on public transport. The 311 service will be replaced by the 87. This service will be similar to the 311 but will run from Dursley to Cribbs Causeway which will now be a direct service to Cribbs from Charfield via Thornbury. The 82 service is currently the service from Chipping Sodbury to Southmead Hospital. This service is now to be extended to Wickwar, Charfield and Wotton-under-Edge and replace the 84. This will now allow residents a direct service to Southmead and will also provide a direct service for our students to Filton College. I have been assured that these are hourly services and will be similar timings to the services that they will replace on 2nd November.

Over the summer we have had further site meetings regarding the investigation of the pedestrian crossing at the raised walkway of longs View and Wotton Road. The proposal will be for anti-skid road surface, associated signage, Belisha beacons and a zebra crossing. Although we do not have final costs yet (it won't be cheap), I intend to bring this forward on the highways priority schemes at the Severn Vale Area Forum which will be held on 4th March 2015. The scheme will be in competition with others, but I know that there is much support for this project and you are welcome to attend the forum.

One final point for those living in Woodlands Road/Hawthorn Close in close proximity to the emergency gate which was deemed as a public right of way: The survey has been completed to remove part of the hedging adjacent to the gate and replace it with a kissing gate, this is also a project that we will need to be funded with a community grant if possible. I hope to have further news of that soon, although until then the gate Will remain closed.

If you require any further clarification on the above or any other points please feel free to contact me.

Councillor John O'Neill

Charfield Parish Council

The role of the Parish Council is to bring some local insight to those who set policy and make decisions that affect our community. We get to comment on things that will effect change in and around Charfield. In doing so we express, in as far as it is reasonable to do so, the wishes of the majority of our parishioners.

Even as the government sought to bring in legislation that would promote development 5over the protection of the green environment, we were looking to see how that might affect Charfield. The Village Plan was instigated, and resulting from some of the findings of that plan, a Housing Needs Survey looked into how much additional housing Charfield needed and wanted. The figures were clear; a handful of affordable homes and a limit of around 24 new homes.

At the same time, South Gloucestershire Council was also reviewing its policies, following the adoption of the Core Strategy in December 2013. One of them, the Policies, Sites and Places Development Plan Document (PSP DPD), was consulted on over the summer and the revised document will be considered by the council next March, with a view to it being adopted. This policy sets out the way South Gloucestershire treats the town and parish spaces within the area, including how much development is applicable to each one. In this document, Charfield is shown to need those 24 new homes. Developers have other ideas.

You probably know that we are under threat of two large developments which would increase the size of our village by nearly 15%. Despite both applications being refused by South Gloucestershire, both are still real threats to the village. Both applicants have appealed against South Gloucestershire's refusal. One has gone to public inquiry and the other is now both an appeal and a new application.

The proposals for Charfield Green, at the eastern boundary of the village and the border with the county of Gloucestershire, are for 106 homes. This appeal will be heard at a public inquiry which will begin early next year. The basis for the appeal is that South Gloucestershire doesn't have a 5 year housing land supply identified in its newly adopted Core Strategy and, therefore, the limits on house building in Charfield ought not to apply. This inquiry is a serious look into the competency of the regional authority and the results will be far reaching.

The development for 30+ homes and an Alzheimers care-home at Days House Leaze has gone to appeal. The council has deferred the appeal until after the PSP DPD has been approved, so this will take place in late spring 2015.

All this takes a lot of work, by your Parish Council as well as by the local authority, and is on top of the “day to day stuff”. At the same time, continuing cuts from central government shut down or reduce services from the local authority and the Parish Council try to pick up the pieces where it can. Volunteers can do so much, but it will be tough to settle the budget in January without increasing the parish precept. Our precept is of course only a small part of the Community Charge, but in these times it hurts to have to consider such a move.

It's not all hard though. I'd like to celebrate the news that Clean Up Green Up Charfield won a Silver Pennant Award in the RHS Britain in Bloom regional awards in Somerset. That's a significant achievement in CUGUC's first year of operation! Even before the award was won, of course, we'd all seen the improvements around the village – at the hall, on Little Bristol Lane, outside the school, seemingly on every verge during the spring, and our massive thanks have to go to the whole group for their ongoing commitment.

As ever, you are invited to come along to the full meetings of the Parish Council, which generally take place every second Tuesday evening in the Memorial Hall or adjacent lounge. There is a lot more going on than just these appeals and it's all about your community … Even so-called small items like noting the continuing issues with the public right of way over the railway line, or litter bins, or the continuance of the parish funded youth group. It's your community, so come and get involved. You don't have to do anything except be interested. Mind, we're all up for election again in 2015, and we all came here from a position of “being interested” …

You can find information on all these matters on the Parish Council website www.charfieldparishcouncil.org.uk, and you are welcome to contact us via Hannah, our Clerk, whose details are also on the website. Oh, website … Who hasn't upgraded their broadband yet? I'm getting nearly 70Mb/s downloaded and even iPlayer works now! /smug

Charfield Memorial Hall & Playing Fields

[Graphic: Charfield Memorial Hall & Playing Fields]

It has been a busy quarter for the village hall. We have had a new boiler put into the Sportsman's Lounge end and finished off the repairs to the roof which had caused damage to the lounge itself. We have formed a sub-committee which is looking into ideas for re-decorating the entire Sportsman's Lounge end which is very exciting!

We are grateful to those of you who attended our recent events and helped us raise much needed funds for the hall. The most recent Sports Quiz by itself raised roughly £400! I would like to say a massive ‘well done’ and ‘thank you’ to all those both on and off the committee who made all the events possible.

We have many events coming up which we hope you will all be able to participate in and enjoy. These include an 'Allo 'Allo French themed car treasure hunt for ALL the family on 19th October, Rural Arts Pagoda Duo (Comedy Music Show) on 25th October and a Family Halloween disco on the 31st October. We also have a ‘Village Christmas’ event planned for Saturday 6th December which will include candle lit singing, a market place and a general festive atmosphere for all to enjoy!

Tickets for all these events will be available from both Steve's Shop and Charfield Service Station. Members of our committee have decided to trial a monthly coffee morning which will be starting very soon so look out for more details!

We are actively seeking new members to join our committee. If you feel passionately about helping within your local community or if you are new to the village and want to get to know people, this is a fantastic opportunity for you! If you are interested please contact me.

This is the last column you will see from me before Christmas so from all here at the Memorial Hall, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Bikes & Bats Boost Village Hall Funds

Charfield Memorial Hall is trying to raise urgently needed funds to put improvements in place and just deal with the day to day requirements of running a community facility of the size it is, and with the problems it encounters. So, it was great when the second week of September gave us two opportunities to add another dimension to some community activities by providing refreshments.

On Wednesday afternoon September 10th, Charfield was enthused by the Tour of Britain coursing through the village. Many villagers turned out to cheer the cyclists through and probably like me were amazed at the sheer scale of the operation; the support that such a race requires is staggering.

[Graphic: Bat] On Friday evening that week, 60 people gathered in the Memorial Hall car park and set off for a 2 hour walk down to the river, armed with bat detectors, in the hope of discovering all about Charfield's bats. Our guide and bat expert Laura made it an immensely interesting evening although I think that such a large group scared most of the bats away. Still, it was a balmy evening and the hot chocolate afterwards at the hall was well received.

So I just want to say a huge thank you to all those who helped the hall raise a much needed extra £160 that week and thanks to the cake bakers too! There are lots of great things that go on at the hall and more coming soon so keep your eyes and ears open.

Dementia Support Group

[Graphic: YOU'RE WELCOME – A safe and friendly community]

Our coffee mornings are going from strength to strength. Each month we continue to welcome new faces as people begin to hear about us. The aim of the group is to offer friendship and support to residents of Charfield and the surrounding villages who are living with, or caring for someone with memory problems. We welcome people of all ages, and as well as offering support to one another, we also welcome visitors who may have information on local services and support, or even a skill or hobby that might be of interest to the group.

We meet for coffee once a month at The Plough Inn, between 10am and 11am. Our next few dates are as follows, with dates for 2015 falling on the 3rd Wednesday of every month.

Wed 12th November
Wed 17th December – Christmas Lunch
Wed 21st January 2015

From the 1st Tuesday in October (and the 1st Tuesday of the month thereafter) you will also find us at the Plough at lunchtime from 1 pm. Again, we aim to offer support for those who may find the morning sessions difficult, and to encourage socialising over a good old-fashioned pub lunch, for those who may not otherwise venture out without a familiar face to meet them there. Well, all that's left is to thank you all for your continued support in 2014, and in helping us to make the group work for those who need it most.

Aladdin Family Pantomime Coming February 2015!

It's all rush, rush here in the world of C.A.D.S. as pantomime season is again upon us. No sooner will the set be packed away from our risqué take on Sinderella and we will be reading and casting for Aladdin! I won't say too much about it only that it's the biggest production we have ever taken on (oh yes it is) and it will be a family-friendly production full of songs, gags and audience participation.

Did you know that C.A.D.S is a completely independent village group run by volunteers? We are not funded by the village hall or any other organisation and exist purely because people like you come and support us.

Originally started as a one-off event back in 2011 with a budget of £0, C.A.D.S has performed 8 different shows (3 written by the group), held 20 performances, and sold over 1,600 tickets! Not bad for a one-off show! Each show costs us between £800 and £2,000 to stage. C.A.D.S is a very small hands-on group, the actors you see on stage also build it, paint it, make the costumes, print the tickets, serve the tea/coffee and even bake some of the cakes!

Without people like you buying tickets and supporting us we couldn't continue. We would love to know what you think and welcome your feedback, so please drop us an email at xxxx @ gmail.com

Community Governor Vacancies

Charfield Primary School currently has vacancies for Community Governors. School governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the county and play an important part in raising school standards by working with the school's head teacher and senior management team to ensure that pupils get a good education. Governors at Charfield provide strategic management to the school, provide challenge and support and ensure that the school is accountable for its actions.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Working together with the head teacher to set the future direction for the school and decide how the school's budget should be spent.
• Making decisions collectively on matters such as performance targets, school policies and the school's development plan.
• Reviewing progress against the School Improvement Plan and the school's budget and objectives and monitoring the impact that the school's policies have on pupil outcomes.

The Governing Body currently meets five times per year and in addition successful applicants would be expected to join a sub-committee which meets four times per year. The Governing Body is made up of various groups which include parents, staff, and Community Governors. Current vacancies are for Community Governors who should be members of the local community, but cannot be parents or carers of children attending the school. The Governing Body is particularly keen to hear from individuals who have an interest in monitoring an aspect of the curriculum and/or financial planning. Full training is available relevant to the role. Ultimately, if you are enthusiastic, committed and have an interest in education we would love to hear from you.

How to apply:
Interested applicants should write expressing their interest to the Chair of Governors via the School Office detailing any relevant experience. Informal discussions are welcomed by the Chair and Vice Chair and can be requested via the school office.

Friends of Charfield School

Following a great year of fundraising we have raised over £5,000 to help the school with much needed equipment to enrich the children's experiences within the school. This could not have been achieved without the help and support of our amazing community and I know the school and committee would like to say a massive thank you for attending and making the events what they are. The committee love organising the events but it is your participation that makes the organisation really worthwhile.

We are now heading into a busy fundraising period for The Friends and by the time you read this we will have held our AGM which I am really glad to say was a huge success with the majority of the committee staying on. A couple of the team needed a well-earned rest from all of their hard work over previous events and I'd like to say a massive thank you from myself, the committee and school for their support. It has been really appreciated and they will be sadly missed during meetings and events to come. That 11said, we have new members who have stepped up to help which is great news as we always like to welcome new members who bring fresh ideas to our fund raising events.

Our first fund raising event has already been completed!

We held a disco within the school for the first time which was split in to infants and juniors. Although we were a little apprehensive at first about attendance, both discos were a great success with a total of 155 children attending across both sessions. The atmosphere was amazing and the vast majority of children were a credit to the school and to the parents. We had a few disruptions which were anticipated but with the help of the teachers, parent helpers and the DJ Ewan the children really enjoyed themselves. A really impressive amount of over £250 was raised on the night and we thank you for sending your children to the disco with some pocket money. As everyone had so much fun we may even hold another disco closer to Christmas to celebrate the end of term and start the festive period with a bang.

Fireworks night is nearly upon us and we are busy arranging the evening to make sure everyone has a lovely time, fingers crossed that the weather holds for us again this year. We have a similar night organised with the professional display organised by Chinnick Theatre Services as well as hot food on the night and a bar for the adults. By the time you read this you will have already seen various signs and posters around the village. We look forward to welcoming you.

As with every event, we are reliant on the hard work and enthusiasm of volunteers and we are always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to get involved and lend some help. You will be made most welcome. New committee members are always needed, but it doesn't matter if you can't help on a regular basis, there are always little jobs that can be done from home – it may even be a money raising idea you have, if so we would love to hear from you! The dates for our upcoming events are confirmed as follows:

Fireworks Night – Friday 7th November
Christmas Fair and Christmas Tree sale Saturday 6th December

I look forward to keeping you informed of our future events, until then, once again, a very big thank you to everyone who has worked with and supported The Friends.

Charfield Primary School

CHARFIELD Achieves …
The school celebrated another year of impressive results in July, maintaining remarkable results in KS2 SATs and improved KS1 results for yet another year. The school has improved upon the number of children achieving the higher bands of attainment. When put in comparison with the averages for South Gloucestershire Local Authority (LA) and Year 6 National Results, it really emphasises what a successful year the school has had.

Caterpillars (EYFS)
Good Level of Development (GLD) – Equal to LA and 19% Above 2013 National.

Butterflies (Year 1)
Phonics Screening – 19% Above LA 19% Above 2013 National.

12LEARNING AT CHARFIELD SCHOOL

In just five weeks the children have achieved a phenomenal amount! Our pupils did extremely well in the summer Reading Challenge this year with over 40 pupils obtaining the award. Well Done All! Our Reading Challenge Display was jam packed with certificates, etc. Each class has a turn publishing some work to our weekly newsletter. Below are the contributions we've had already.

[Graphic: Bumblebee] Bumblebee Class (Year 6) As part of their Hearts & Minds topic. Bumblebees considered opinions about organ donation. They also thought about the opinions of different religious groups.

[Graphic: Dragonfly] Dragonfly Class (Year 5) were the first newsletter contributors of the year. Already the children were creating excellent work from their learning! The children wrote letters to Miss Thorne, telling her about themselves. Miss Thorne then chose one to respond to.

[Graphic: Ladybird] Ladybird Class (Year 4) In Week 2 Ladybird Class were learning about 2D and 3D shapes. They made 3D shape structures out of play-dough and straws. Everyone had great fun and managed to make lots of different 3D shapes. One group even made a hexagonal prism!

If you would like to read our CHADRA contribution in glorious colour, including examples of the children's work, please take a look at the electronic version on our school website.

[Graphic: Beetle] Beetle Class (Year 3) have been creating islands for their adventure stories.

[Graphic: Grasshopper] Grasshopper Class (Year 2) welcomed MP Steve Webb into their classroom to talk about letters they had written to him about their ideas for improving Charfield. The children were fantastic ambassadors for our school and our village.

[Graphic: Butterfly] Butterfly Class (Year 1) have been very busy looking at houses we all live in.

Charfield Out of School Club

It seems a long time since the children were enjoying their activities during their long summer holiday. The summer holiday club was a great success with activities based on a different country every day, including arts and crafts, cooking, challenges and competitions. We had visits from Zoolab, Sort-It, Smart Sports and volunteers who ran special workshops for the children on Indian cooking and mosaics. Thank you to all our visitors, the children really enjoyed all these new and different activities.

The club is already taking bookings for the October half term holiday, so please contact the club if your children would like to come along to join in the fun. The theme will be Halloween – so lots of fun and spooky activities to enjoy! Our breakfast club continues to run every day between 7.30am and 8.40am and is proving popular. If you wish your children to come along for a trial session, please contact us to book them in.

We would like to welcome all the new children who joined the club in September. The club's student members of staff are leaving us to move on to new projects. We wish them well for the future and thank them for all their hard work over the past year. Another two students have since joined the club in their place, a warm welcome to them.

The club is still keen to recruit volunteers from the local area who would like to help in holiday times, either by showing the children a specific skill or hobby they enjoy or even if they just want to get involved with the activities already offered at the out of school club. We would love to hear from you. All volunteers would need to be aged 18+ and prepared to undergo an enhanced DBS (previously CRB) check as is required for all individuals who work closely with children.

If you know of any new families who would like to use our service, both before and/or after school or during the school holidays, or, if you yourself would like to find out more, please contact us at the club. You can check us out on www.charfield.org/coosc. The club is open to children up to the age of 13, so even if your children are moving onto secondary school they are still welcome after school and in the holidays.

May we take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who continues to use the club and a big thank you to the staff – Pat, Georgina, Jo, and Anne for continuing to make the club an outstanding facility for our village.

Thank You for the Harvest

[Graphic: CHARFIELD SCHOOL]

On Monday 28th September, the whole school made the short journey across the road to S1. John's Church for our Harvest Service. Representatives from each class shared some Harvest poems, artwork and prayers. Thank you to Rev. Chris for inviting us to the church. A huge THANK YOU for your donations to the Yate & Chipping Sodbury Food Bank. We were able to fill two entire tables with donations! Thank you for also donating towards the Syria Crisis Appeal fund. We raised £21 to help people in desperate need.

Charfield Pre-School

Hello! A big welcome to all our new starters! We are delighted that they're all settling in so well. We'd also like to say a big ‘welcome back’ to those of you who were with us last year. It's hard to believe that this is the last pre-school year for those who are now in the Rising 5s!

We still have a few plates available on certain sessions, so please call Debra on 07966 61xxxx if you would like to chat about registering your child as a new starter, or about extending your existing hours. Don't forget that some of our sessions are able to welcome children from 2 years old (no potty training required!), so again please call or e-mail us at xxxx @ gmail.com for more details.

As we begin another school-year, we would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to some very important people. A huge thanks to our fantastic team of staff, parents and volunteer helpers for all their hard work and dedication at each and every event. We would like to thank our new parents, who came and supported our AGM on Wed 10th September, and our Committee Members (both old and new, without whom the pre-school would not be able to do all the great things we are so proud of. An extra special thanks goes out to Karen Stainthorpe, who stepped down as Chair after two fabulous years. Thank you for all your hard work … You have left me with some pretty big shoes to fill ☺. Finally the pre-school would like to say a big thank you to Wotton Accountancy Associates for their continued invaluable support by performing an Independent Review of the year end accounts for 2013/14.

We have had a number of tough challenges over the past few years, which the staff and committee have worked tirelessly to turn around, and once again, this year we will be relying heavily on fundraising and marketing the pre-school in and out of the village … So why not join our Lottery Club? Enter our monthly prize draw and win a cash prize! This is a great way for grandparents, aunties/uncles and family friends to support pre-school every month … as they say – you have to be in it, to win it!

We are however, DELIGHTED to announce that to improve our storage facilities here. Work for which we hope will commence very we have just been awarded a grant funding of £750 shortly.

In time for the Christmas Shopping season, we are re-launching our ‘easyfundraising’ campaign, aimed at those who buy things on the internet. As the name suggests, it's a REALLY EASY way for the pre-school to raise funds.

Please visit www.easyfundraising.org.uk and sign up as a ‘supporter’, You can really make a difference … simply by shopping!

[Graphic: Christmas shopping bag] TALKING OF SHOPPING! Our Annual Christmas Shopping evening will be taking place on Friday 14th November this year, with lots of stalls, and goodies for everyone! Do come along to the Memorial Hall for an evening of festive fun, and to support your local pre-school. If you know of anyone who would like to book a table, please contact Sam Brown on 07772 41xxxx.

[Graphic: Santa] HO! HO! HO! Finally, Santa is already booked to parade the village on his float on Sunday 14th December this year, from 3pm. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for those sleigh bells, and a little helper ringing on your doorbell with a collection tin in hand!

Thanks again for all your continued support and until next time, have a great Christmas, and see you all in the New Year!

Steve's Shop and Post Office

The Vehicle Tax changes have been a bit confusing for everyone, including us, so to help, here are some FAQ's

Will I still be able to buy car tax at my local Post Office?
Yes – and it's the only way to pay by cash or cheque. The only difference is that you won't receive a paper tax disc.

Will I still receive a reminder?
Yes – DVLA will still notify you before your car tax is due to expire.

How will the authorities know that my car is taxed?
DVLA will have a digital record of who has and hasn't paid, and a paper tax disc is no longer needed as proof. Almost all on-road enforcement now uses Automatic Number Plate Readers which read your registration number rather than your tax disc. Anyone who hasn't taxed their vehicle could face a fine of up to £1,000.

I have just bought a car, what do I need to do?
You are required to tax the vehicle immediately, failure to do so could lead to a fine of up to £1,000. You can do this at the Post Office. All you need to do is bring in your New Keeper supplement or logbook and payment and we can help you ensure that your vehicle is taxed. We will also ensure that DVLA are aware that the vehicle has a new keeper and if necessary send off your documents free of charge

I'm selling my car, how do I claim my tax back.
When you sell a car, you need to complete the new keepers information, and give the new keeper the V5C/2 (the green slip). Then send off the rest to the DVLA, and they will automatically refund any complete months left on the tax.

I haven't got a log book, what should I do?
Still come to the Post Office, we can help you apply for a logbook at the same time you tax your vehicle.

16Can I have a paper disc if I want one?
Unfortunately, no – they will no longer be issued. You won't need to display anything on your windscreen any more.

Will this cause any problems when I take my car overseas?
No, DVLA are working closely with border control agencies, police and local authorities overseas on the changes to ensure no issues are experienced when vehicles are taken out of the country.

What documents will I need to bring to the Post Office?
You will still need to bring in your tax disc renewal letter or log book

Is it true that it's no longer necessary to bring a Certificate of Motor Insurance to the Post Office when renewing Car Tax?
Customers do not need to present Insurance Certificates.

Do I need to keep my old tax disc?
From 1st October 2014, you have the option of removing the tax disc from your windscreen or you can carry on displaying it.

Girl Guiding Wotton District

[Graphic: WE DISCOVER, WE GROW, Girlguiding]

Jackie Woodall and Sarah Norton share the District Commissioner role. We are pleased that Girl Guiding is thriving in the area but we really do need more adult volunteers to help us run the units. In particular we need leaders for Charfield Brownies as Nicki Brain has decided to finish at Christmas. If we are unable to find new leaders the unit will close. It would be such a shame for a village the size of Charfield not to have a Brownie Pack so please contact us if you think you might be able to help. Please see the back page for our contact details. Or you could register your interest at https://enquiryv.girlguiding.org.uk

You may have read in the last issue of the CHADRA that we were opening a new Guide unit in Wotton. Sadly, we have had to put these plans on hold as the volunteer leader had to move away from the area at short notice. Perhaps the Guide age would appeal to you more than Brownies? If so, how about volunteering to open Guides – perhaps in Charfield?

Rainbows – Girls age 5–7 years old. We are currently travelling round the world, without leaving the village hall. We have been to India, and are off to the Kruger National park this week. The unit is currently full, so if you have a girl approaching age 5, please get her name down on the waiting list, contact details on the back page.

Brownies – Girls age 7–10 years old. As you can read above, Nicki is no longer able to continue with Brownies, so if you know of anyone who would be interested, please contact our District Commissioners. As well as a leader, we also need helpers. This can be anything from helping at the meetings once a month, to keeping the accounts, to organising games and activities at the meetings. Leadership qualifications and mentoring are available.

Guides – Girls age 10–14 years old. We have been busy fund raising for our next adventure, we're off to London. As it's Autumn, we'll be out walking in the dark, with chips at the end of course! We are looking at disaster emergencies and First Aid. Our older girls are working towards their Baden Powell Awards. We are always looking for more helpers for meetings, as we have 30 girls. They are a great bunch and you can guarantee that you will leave laughing.

Senior Section – Girls age 14 and over. Meeting every other Thursday, currently with the Guides, but working on our own programme.

If you would like your daughter to join Girl Guiding UK, or would like to volunteer to work with us, please contact the relevant leader or go to: http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/ get_involved/ volunteer/ register_your_interest.aspx

1st Woodend Scout Group

All of the sections have enjoyed the warm Autumn weather up at our Avening Green site and with the nights closing in we are gradually returning to the warm indoors of our Cromhall HQ.

Some of the sections have been working on their naturalist badge, turning over logs, stones and under growth to find different creepy crawlies, there seems to be tons of slugs and millipedes and a variety of different coloured spiders with magnificent webs.

The Beavers have a few trips out from HQ before the end of term. They are off to Tesco in Thornbury to find out how food reaches the shelves and are also planning their annual trip to see Santa on the Bitten Railway.

The Scouts have just enjoyed a trip to London visiting the Natural History and Science Museums which was a lovely but very long day. All the leaders agreed that the dinosaur in the entrance way to the History Museum seems smaller than we can remember. Does anyone else think the same?

The Cubs and Scouts are off to stay at YH St Briavel's Castle. The Cubs are up in one of the towers with the female leaders sleeping on the ground floor in the ‘Oubliette’ room. The Scouts are sleeping in the other tower with the male leaders sleeping in the ‘Priest's’ room. We've been a couple of times before, it's a lovely place to stay and we get a guided tour on our last morning which is really interesting. On the Saturday, the Cubs are going up to the Wye Valley Visitors Centre where they will be taking part in laser tag, mini golf, butterfly world and of course visiting the amazing hedge puzzle, which is fascinating. The Scouts are being a bit more energetic taking part in a days' worth of cycling. There's going to be some sore muscles after this one! On the Sunday we're visiting Clearwell Caves – the Cubs on the upper level while the Scouts don their overalls and helmets and go crawling, sorry caving in the semi deep level. That one's not for me I'm afraid, I'm with the Cubs.

By the end of October we hope to have a good idea of the number of Scouts who would like to go on our 9th Group trip to Malta in 2016. Planning is ongoing with some new places to visit with a bit of environmental work to take part in as well.

We're also planning a trip next summer for the Scouts and maybe some older Cubs to one of my boys' campsites up in the North East. I have managed to book a week in the very popular Cleveland County Scouts camp site at Kettleness just outside Whitby. The building is an old railway station, fun to stay in and in a really picturesque area. We'll have trips to the York Railway Museum, Pickering Castle, Flamingo Land Theme Park, a trip on the North Yorkshire Steam Railway and fish and chips in the sea port of Whitby. Are you jealous yet?

We are in real need of help with leaders. I'm currently helping out the Cub Leader at Thursday Cubs with a Sectional Assistant who will be leaving at Christmas. We are desperate for help so please get in touch if you would like to join us?

Forthcoming events:

7th November: Charfield School Fireworks Night – we're selling candy floss.

9th November: Remembrance Parade, this year at St Andrews Church, Cromhall

22nd November: Wotton Charities Fair – we're selling morning coffee and afternoon tea as well as lunches.

12th December: 1st Woodend Group Carol Service, St John's Church, Charfield

Yours in Scouting,

Is it possible that a game of Paintball saved my life?

[Graphic] October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A Charfield resident and distributor of CHADRA shares her story …

The story so far … In March of this year I went paintballing with family and had the best fun ever even though any hit is very painful – a paintball travels at about 184mph, so yes, it hurts! I took two hits to my chest which nearly made me scream. Anyway, once home we all compared welts, swellings and bruises and mine were no different to anyone else's.

After a month or so, once all the bruising had started to fade, I noticed that the swelling on my left breast had not reduced in size and was getting bigger. Thinking it was a blood clot, I thought it best to get it checked out, so off I went to the GP and told her the story. Her response to this was, “However the lump got there it needs to be checked out,” and I was referred for a mammogram. The mammogram showed a large mass and the consultant was clear that this mass was in fact presenting itself as Cancer. However she was mindful that I had just recently received a trauma to this area so would not rule it in or out. A biopsy was taken and off I skipped, still unconcerned.

Two weeks later I was called back to the Breast Clinic and was told that the mass was indeed a tumour. It is a so-called ‘mobile’ tumour and, until it was disturbed by the force of the paintball, it had sat undetected. It is classed grade 3/stage 3 and it has already spread to my lymph nodes. The consultant estimated that it had been present from about February of this year, so it was growing fast. I feel extremely fortunate that, but for the paintball hit, discovery could have been delayed and the diagnosis consequently a lot worse. It seems you can feel very well with Cancer, as I did. I had only just completed a half marathon for Breast Cancer Research and little did I know I was walking around with my own tumour. Irony, anyone?! So yes, you could say ‘paintball saved my life’, but what is more remarkable is what followed. Obviously the news of Cancer comes as a shock not just to the patient but to family and friends. This set of people went into overdrive and they have carried me on the start of a very long process as my treatment plan is likely to take 12–18 months.

The support of my family is just amazing, you have all been so supportive and stable which in turn keeps me strong and focused. However, the support of friends has literally blown us away. One very organised friend arranged a cooking rota. So the 5 days following a chemo session, when I am at my lowest, the most tasty, thoughtful, nutritious meals arrive for us. A big thank you to all the wonderful cooks, we appreciate all your hard work and effort. Then among other kindnesses I received weekly haircuts in order to prep me for my hair loss, Ada our dog has been walked any day that I have been unable to manage and I have had numerous lifts for hospital visits. Naughty sweets and chocolates arrive monthly from our lovely friends in Tewkesbury. The grass has been cut by neighbours and all this on top of the cards, beautiful flowers, ‘chemo packs’, the most wonderful thoughtful gifts together with the never ending support, visits, hugs (very careful hugs!), chats, advice, laughs, shoulders to lean on, telephone calls, and texts. Thank you to all of you.

Then there is our amazing our NHS. It is quite difficult to put into words but from the word go this team of dedicated people stepped in and I have experienced the most professional, organised, calm, gentle, thoughtful and individual care. Probably all routine to them but I find it remarkable how it all comes together. So thank you.

My chemotherapy treatment will finish in October and then I am to embrace an operation followed by radiotherapy, but I will get through this knowing you are all by my side I cannot thank all of you enough and for those of you that say, “But I only did …” you have no idea how that thing you ‘only’ did supported me and my family and we are eternally grateful to you. Thank you. I am so very humbled, my family are humbled. We are so very proud to call you our friends and to live in this wonderful village. Life is a gift and is truly amazing …

Always here for any of you,
Your friend, Helen England.

Marilyn's Bit

“Good evening, Marilyn,” the voice on the phone said. ‘It's Gold Mining Commodities here.” I couldn't stop laughing. “A,” I said, “It's Mrs Smith to you and, B, I don't think I'm a suitable candidate.” Still, I was flattered he'd phoned.

[Graphic] Keith and I managed to get over to see our Lawrence and family at Easter. It was my birthday whilst we were there. Lawrence works for the Ellis Island Foundation which is connected with the Statue of Liberty. He'd planned a trip for us all to visit the Island and when we got off the ferry we had an extra surprise. Not only were we going into the statue, he'd got tickets for us to climb up into the crown. Wow, what a treat. Climbing up and up and then to look out through the curved windows of the statue's crown was fantastic. What was truly magical was to see all parts of her carved out in the metal from the inside. Needless to say I've got loads of photos.

Keith wanted to visit an Antique Emporium we'd discovered on a previous trip. We thought a train journey would be fun. Kristie, Lawrence's stepdaughter, aged 15, thought it would be a good idea to come with us, to help out the tourists! We got off at Tarrytown, which, incidentally, is next to Sleepy Hollow, all in the Bronx. We had a good old mooch about, ate fab ice creams from a fantastic parlour and decided to return home. That's when the fun started. We bought our return tickets. The train pulled in. We got on. It pulled away. It was then that we realised we were on the wrong train. Most of the passengers had luggage and the inside of the compartments looked different. Then the ticket inspector came along. “We're on the wrong train, aren't we?” I asked. “You sure are ma'am,” she replied. “Your first stop is Harlem and then Grand Central Station.” I said that when we go through Riverdale, our stop, that I wouldn't pull the emergency cord. “You do that ma'am, I'll have to arrest you.” So much for British humour! Kristie said “Let's just cruise like hippies.”

I was looking after our four year old granddaughter. (We're now in Bradley Stoke). She was well buzzing and wouldn't go to sleep. “I shall get told off by your Mummy and Daddy if you don't hurry up and settle down,” I said. “Well,” she responded, “you're not a very good babysitter are you Nanny.” No comment.

I was going out the next day with our Sophie and Miliie, to the zoo. I needed to go out to the compost bin but decided against it. It was a bit late, the grass was damp and I didn't want to slip over. Instead, I was sorting stuff out in our bedroom, obviously not concentrating and stubbed my little right toe on the bed. OUCH! Hobbling person seen at zoo.

I'm just going to apologise to you my lovely fans for not writing in the July issue. I don't know if what had caused my Shingles was still floating about but I was definitely not in a giggly mood to write and we all need a bit of light of heart so I didn't do any ‘bits.’ I've just read that there may be a limit of length of article, perhaps I'd better leave the bus pass saga until January!

I'd better sign off in a minute but will end on this. I was painting my garden fence a beautiful colour called ‘seagrass’. I was standing on an old kitchen chair. I suppose it's a bit retro now. It used to belong to my Grannie. Anyway it had various splashes of colours on from different decorating sessions. I had a small amount of paint left and so decided to smarten up the chair. I was a bit slapdash with it and bits of original brown showed through. My Mum was down from London and commented, “Oh, is that what you call distressed?” “No,” I replied, “it's just a bit upset.”

Bye, dear friends.
Love Maz xxx

Sort It! Centres Step Up Residency Checks

South Gloucestershire's Sort It!* recycling centres are to step up user residency checks in a bid to reduce unauthorised use of the sites.

Every tonne of waste tipped by unauthorised users, such as non-residents or commercial traders, costs the council £100 per tonne to process. Unauthorised use can also create delays and inconvenience for residents seeking to use the district's four sites at Mangotsfield, Stoke Gifford, Thornbury and Yate.

Residency checks have been in place since 2008 but these were stepped up from 1st October and visitors to the sites may be asked to provide proof of both identification and residency. Any official documents that can confirm both types of information – such as driver's licenses, utility bills, Council Tax bills or passports are acceptable.

Further information on South Gloucestershire's waste and recycling services is can be found by visiting their website at www.southglos.gov.uk/recycling

Memorial Hall & Playing Fields

YOUR VILLAGE HALL NEEDS YOU!

The hall's committee is made up of a group of volunteers without whom the hall would have to close. I think we all agree that this should never happen!

In that vein, at May's Annual General Meeting, this committee will be looking to fill the roles of Vice Chairman, Secretary, Booking Secretary and Treasurer!

These 4 roles are crucially important to keeping the hall open.

If you are willing and able to help keep the hall open please contact Liam on 0794743xxxx or xxxx @ gmail.com.
Thank you.

How Fast is Your Broadband?

Fast Broadband finally arrived in Charfield at the beginning of September. (Hoorah!). Lots of service providers offer Superfast Fibre Broadband, often bundled with phone and TV packages. Although Fast Broadband has arrived in the village, not all addresses can access it yet. To see if it's arrived in your road, (As I write, it hasn't reached my road yet – Woodlands Road ☹), refer to the line checker on your service provider's website or give them a call and ask them to check the line for ‘Fast/Ultra Broadband’.
