When is CHADRA not CHADRA?

Well as the new Editor of CHADRA this was a question I had to ask …

Having lived in the village for 16 years, and being an avid reader of ‘CHADRA’ as well as editing Tim's contributions as Hall Chairman, I had always assumed CHADRA was CHADRA (still with me?!)

Well, CHADRA isn't CHADRA as CHADRA is a group of people and the thing colloquially referred to as CHADRA is in fact a newsletter! This newsletter!

Does it really matter? Probably not, but a little clarification might be useful.

CHADRA – Charfield and District Residents Association – is a group of volunteers, and as you read through this and many editions of the newsletter you will see that the village is full of volunteers brilliantly supporting one group or another, and looking for more volunteers to sign up to support those various organisations.

The Charfield and District Residents Association was originally formed back in the day to provide a vehicle for villagers to take up causes on behalf of the village. The 25 pence (yes, a whole £1.00 per year!) entitles you to be a member of CHADRA. There is a constitution and a full committee of Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and committee members. Full details are available at www.Charfield.org

The Newsletter is the ‘mouth piece’ of the village bringing us all up to speed on local matters, whether that be with articles from individuals and groups, from John O'Neill our local Councillor to the Rainbows or local Scouts, topics include; new houses being planned for the village, how much money was raised at a fund raising event, to what is happening in the next 3 months.

Where does the money go you might ask? The subscriptions and the advertising pay for the printing of the newsletter and any extra goes towards a small fund that is used to support village causes.

Like other groups in the village, Charfield and District Residents Association is also looking for new members and committee post holders:

Chair: Joan is stepping down after a VERY long stint in the role, see ‘A Vote of Thanks’.

Treasurer: Julia is stepping down after 10 years (the second time around) at the end of 2016, so plenty of time for a new bean counter to step forward!

Distributors: The number of distributors is declining: an hour, four times a year isn't a big ask – is it?!

Committee Members: More are always welcome! No matter what age or how long you have lived in the village. What is happening next for the newsletter? For a start (and huge thanks to Julia for her research on the subject) all future publications will be printed by Manor Printing Services (due to the demise of the printing machine).

The committee have some ideas including – electronic versions of the newsletter, changes in advertising, colour print, survey of readers – and we welcome ideas from the readership and advertisers. Perhaps you would like to see more editions? Or less? Or none? Perhaps you think the newsletter should represent different groups from the village?

Please contact a member of the committee if you value the CHADRA and would be able to spare some time to get involved. Contact details are on the inside of the front cover. It would be lovely to see some new faces. Our next meeting is planned for 22 September.

And finally. (almost), a massive thank you to Alison White for her term as Editor and for providing me with an excellent handover; hopefully I can continue her good works. Thanks also to the CHADRA committee for being so welcoming, although I hope my arrival on the committee hasn't been the catalyst for the recent resignations!

Right, now back to the tennis! Come on Andy!

Angie Hill – Editor

PS: Apologies to Mark Rosher for not including his report in the last edition. It can be found at http://charfieldparishcouncil.org.uk/?p=699#more-699

A Vote of Thanks …

Joan Crowfoot, Duplicator Queen and Vice Chairman of the CHADRA committee, has decided to retire from both positions. It is therefore a fine opportunity for us to consider her CHADRA history.

Joan was first a CHADRA committee member sometime in the 1970s. She became advertising coordinator in 1997 until the post was taken on by Vanessa (and now Alison Howard), and she still has a delivery round on Wotton Road. Since 1999, Joan has been our Vice-Chair; as we don't have a Chair, this means that Joan has acted as our Chair despite her efforts to avoid the title! Most importantly, since Edition 89 in 1997, 19 years ago, Joan Crowfoot has given CHADRA's duplicator a home, stored all the paper, inks and stencils, and has done all the newsletter duplicating. That's about 2,152,000 pieces of paper in total through the old drum duplicator and then the Duplo machine, all personally supervised by this very practical lady.

In recent years, Joan has hosted the ‘collation party’ and the CHADRA committee have walked round her dining room table 780+ times every 3 months to collate and staple the newsletter. We have drunk her coffee and tea and scoffed her biscuits, and probably worn a path in the carpet.

Joan has been a wonderful Vice-Chair, employing her humour, wisdom, and local knowledge to great effect, and has kept the ship steady for many years.

On behalf of the readership, we offer Joan our sincere appreciation and three rousing cheers for her wonderful contribution to our village life. We are happy to report that Joan will continue to bring her wisdom to our committee meetings. She doesn't get off that easily! Thank you, Joan from us all.

The CHADRA Committee

[Graphic: Thank You]

Goodbye from Steve and Cath

In the words of Kit Harrington (aka Jon Snow, Game of Thrones) we are so, so sorry.

We know it came as a surprise to many of you when we left so suddenly, and we missed the Chadra deadline by one week, which it why this article was not included in the last issue.

It was not a sudden decision. We had been in talks since October about the sale of the shop, but wanted to keep it quiet, as when we last had a sale in 2010 and a new project to go to, the buyer withdrew on the day of exchange, and we didn't have a backup plan. So this time we decided to stay quiet.

We moved to the village in 1988 (I know 28 years ago) into no.8 Avon Road, a Spar shop as it was then, into the rank of 4 shops with the newsagent, hairdresser, and fruit and veg shop. We have seen many changes over the years; when we started we introduced a butchery counter (does anyone remember the excellent ham on the bone we used to have?); when Marilyn closed, we took on fruit and veg; when the newspaper shop closed, we bought it, knocked through and took on the papers (and paper rounds); we baked bread and pies; we grew and sold flowers; and finally, two years ago we took on the Post Office counter. That made our final decision for us, it was time to pass on the running of the shop to someone else.

Just to make it clear, we have not retired, there's plenty of work left in us, although we have not yet decided what to do. As one of our children said, “It's accrued holiday”. We have found a house just outside the village, so should be moving in July, and then we can decide what to do next.

We are enjoying getting out and about again, off out on our bikes when the weather permits, looking forward to having a garden again so we can start planting.

Thank you all for your support and friendship over the last 28 years, we wish Latestop every success!

Cath & Steve

Friends of Charfield School

I am writing this in late June looking out of the window at rain clouds, let's hope that by the time you read this we are bathed in lovely sunshine and are all enjoying a relaxing cider or Pimms in the garden.

Over recent months we have not had our normal levels of fund raising events and I apologise that we were unable to organise Charfest this year. We are having a rethink and hope to bring the event back in 2017 bigger and better! Any ideas you have that you feel would enhance the event would be most welcome, please get in touch via email or mobile.

A community grant fund was used to create a play / climbing area in the playground. The new feature in the playground has been well received and certainly provides the physical development we were hoping for, not only for the school but other groups who use the school and pre-school facilities.

This project wouldn't have been possible without the huge support provided by John O'Neill. His intervention at the last second enabled us to fully fund the build with the aid of a community grant. A massive THANK YOU to John from the Friends team and the School!

Other projects completed from fundraising proceeds include

There are a number of requests from the school for new projects including (excitingly!) looking into the feasibility of putting an amphitheatre in the wooded area. Anyone who could offer groundwork support, seating structures or canopies please get in touch as we will be looking at costs over the summer. This addition would significantly enhance the outdoor classroom facilities that the teachers and school can use, and if we can install a canopy they can keep dry as well.

A date for your diaries, our AGM will be held on the 21st September at the school at 7.30pm.

Your support would be very welcome as we need to elect a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Fireworks, the Christmas Fair and Charfest will not be possible without an elected committee and there are a number of us standing down this year so your support is essential. Please come and attend and get involved if you can.

Another way that you can help The Friends is through Easy Fund Raising. It couldn't be simpler to get involved you just need to register on the following website:

www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/friendsofcharfieldschool

There are over 2000 retailers listed including Amazon, John Lewis, M&S, Ebay and Argos, etc. so the next time you are online please try it out. We have already managed to raise over £1,800 to date through this scheme!

I look forward to keeping you informed of our future events, until then, once again, a very big thank you to everyone who has worked with and supported the Friends.

Dave Ashby: Chair – The Friends of Charfield Primary School

The Railway Tavern

The Railway Tavern is undergoing a refurbishment and is due to re-open on Thursday August 18th.

It will be under new management. Martin and Julie, a couple with over 20 years' experience in the licenced trade, will be running it.

There will be an extensive new menu and new opening hours.

Martin & Julie are looking forward to meeting the villagers of Charfield!

Many Thanks,

Martin & Julie

Clean Up Green Up Charfield

[Logo: CUGUC] I always seem to start with a mention of the weather as it is a big topic of conversation when you are trying to get things done outside. I think we have had sun, rain, storms and wind so far this summer.

Work has continued on all sites to keep them looking beautiful. They are all performing their socks off. The poppies at the school and the Little Bristol Lane corner are looking particularly fabulous and to my delight I have noticed that the poppies have spread along the verges. They are supposed to be difficult to establish but it looks as if poppies love Charfield.

We have just installed planters at the Memorial Hall, the School and the Church. These all look really smart and will add an extra bit of colour to the hard landscaping. Some eagle eyed among you may have noticed some other additions at some of our sites. However, the full purpose behind them will remain a secret until we are ready to launch in full. Watch this space!

We do try to get together regularly to enjoy each other's company without trowel and spade so decided to visit Charfield Meadow. We choose a lovely summer's evening and it was a delight to have a short walk in a little known corner of Charfield. A couple of us even enjoyed a Pimms (out of a can – surprisingly good) sitting on the stile as the trains went past.

Many thanks to various members of the team who have, outside their commitments to CUGUC, organised other events and donated the proceeds to CUGUC – to Vanessa and Isabel for the monies raised from the Church Plant Sales, to Mo Yost for monies raised from her art exhibition and to Sue, Barbara and myself for monies raised from tea sales at their NGS Open Garden event. (Not sure I can really thank myself but I just have!)

We enjoyed putting together a flower display at the Church to celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday with beautiful flowers from our gardens. The displays from various groups in the village were just lovely. It is very interesting to see how one theme can be interpreted in so many different ways.

We have some ideas of where we would like to expand to next but we do need more helpers before we can stretch ourselves any further. Gardening skills aren't essential, enthusiasm, energy and humour are more important. We are a friendly bunch and helping us can be included in your Get Fit campaign with the added bonus of regular get-togethers with nice people, biscuits and coffee.

Find us on Facebook – just search for CUGUC. Don't forget to let us have your ideas, comments and donations.

Swim, Bike, Run!

On Sunday 19 June I turned up at Wotton Pool, complete with bike, thinking “oh heck, what have I done now?!” Last year I had watched a friend compete in the Wotton Triathlon and thought what a lovely friendly event it was and really I ought to do it. So, when entries opened earlier this year I put my name down. Now I have done a couple of sprint triathlons in the past, but not for a few years – when I was a lot younger and didn't have dodgy hamstrings. Oh, by the way, they aren't called sprint triathlons because you go really fast, but because they are shorter distances! On that subject I was very relieved when Gideon, the organiser, posted the day before the event that the run leg at KLB school would be 3.3km rather than the planned 5km due to the rough terrain. I was dreading the run as when you get off the bike after 20k you have legs like jelly!

The Wotton triathlon is a fundraiser for Wotton pool which is currently trying to raise money for refurbishment of the changing rooms, amongst other projects. Wotton pool is run as a charitable community enterprise with some paid staff and some volunteers. The triathlon is organised voluntarily by Gideon York and an amazing team of helpers and I would like to say a massive thank you to Gideon and everyone else as it is a great event; the swim training sessions were especially useful for a rather basic swimmer like me. For anyone who wants to challenge themselves without getting involved in anything too competitive or expensive I would thoroughly recommend it – friendly, informal, free to enter, and it's right on the doorstep – so what are you waiting for? If I can do it anyone can …!

Incidentally, if anyone would like to donate, my VirginMoney page is still open: – http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DeborahField1

The New Face on the Block

A conversation with Greg Gardner.

Greg who? Some of you will have met Greg Gardner – yes, that is the correct spelling – most will not, but many of you will have noticed changes in Steve's Shop (when will we stop calling it that, I wonder) in the last few weeks. And there are more to come.

Greg has been in retailing for 35 years and, with his business partner Mark, owns four shops in Taunton, Oakhampton, Bournemouth and now Charfield. For years they had been looking for the right place to add to their enterprise, Latestop(SW), and were delighted to find Steve's Shop in our village, in exactly the type of location they were seeking (as was Steve, I'm sure!). ‘We were looking for a thriving store that we could invest in further, and work with the local population, to provide a level of service and range of goods that we believe the village deserves.’ Brilliant. In these days of closing small shops this was so good to hear.

His enthusiasm and positive thinking shone through and was infectious. ‘We are prepared to invest significantly to increase and enhance the sales area, ultimately up to 50% more and add trial ranges. We see it as a long term project and want to be part of the community.’ Good news for the village, I think.

The Charfield shop and their Taunton branch are Greg's responsibility and I wondered about the amount of driving that must be involved, but living in a village near Weston-Super-Mare, as he does with his two adult sons, he is perfectly placed to travel between the two. And, I guess, he doesn't mind getting up early – my interview with him was at 6.15 am but as I'm an early riser as well that suited me too. Growing up with a father in the forces means he has lived all round the world but mainly in villages and quite obviously he feels perfectly at home in, and understands, this type of environment.

Changes are well underway with higher shelves for a greater selection of everyday needs. Already some of these are sourced locally and he is hoping that it will be possible to expand these suppliers. ‘We aim to be everything to everyone’, he laughed, ‘well, within limits, that is’. He was very pleased to show me a letter from Costcutters, the name that will soon be above the shop. They are a supplier with a brand and a support structure who donate a small percentage of their profits to good causes and Greg has nominated Charfield Primary School. The letter was to give the excellent news that the school has been officially adopted which will mean ongoing support for the school and community.

What, I wondered, did he do for relaxation? ‘Rugby’, was the instant reply. ‘I love it and am heavily committed to our local club, The Hornets RFC, from Weston, where I manage the Development Team. That, and the cinema. I go every week.’ Had he visited our lovely cinema in Wotton I asked. ‘I didn't know you had one’, he replied. He does now.

I asked about the post office and Greg says he views it as a valuable service, no different from everything he already has, and hopes, to offer. He's certainly keeping up with the times. He has no credit card charge and has installed payment by contactless which must speed up transactions no end. ‘I've paid good money for the loyalty Steve's built up and I know how to react to customers' requirements. We now want to move from an ‘emergency’ store to a top-up shop.’ He is, and I don't use this somewhat overworked word lightly, passionate about his plans and how he sees the future. Leaving to go home for breakfast, I wished him good luck and a happy holiday – he was leaving for a week's break that afternoon. ‘I love France and know it well. My life is work and rugby’, he said cheerfully and I, for one, feel that Steve has a very worthy successor.

John O'Neill Local Councillor

[Graphic: South Gloucestershire Council]

The once in a generation decision has been made and the majority have decided that we should exit the European Union. In a vote that divided the country South Gloucestershire was also split on how our future should be decided with 53% voting to leave, with our neighbours in Stroud and Bristol voting to remain with similar majorities. Regardless of how we all voted, it is now a time to come together and work for the best outcome for our future.

Just when we thought it was all over, Councillors across the region will be voting again this week on the West of England Devolution Deal which will also have a bearing on the lives of people in this area. The vote will have been decided by the time you read this. Many of us felt that this was a decision that should have had more engagement with the public.

Many of you will be aware that North Somerset, one of the four authorities involved, rejected the deal earlier in the month at their Council meeting citing that they did not feel the deal was good enough. The four authorities have always felt that devolution could be completed without a metro mayor which would add a further layer of bureaucracy to a combined authority. The government has decided that a metro mayor will be a pre-requisite to the deal and any deal without a metro mayor would not attract funding. North Somerset have always been more insistent that they would not want to work with the metro mayor model, but for the other authorities, the more important element is that the governance is right and any major decisions must be by the majority vote.

Just to keep everyone up to date with the major sites planning applications in the area, Waddeton Homes have now obtained outline permission to place 64 homes on the site adjacent to the school. You will recall that this was the site for a care home and 30 houses but the developer was unable to get a registered care home provider on board and has now changed his plans to all housing. We are now waiting for a further application with details of the site content, but the outline plans show the access will be where the current gate is with a footpath from there to the school.

Crest Nicholson have submitted their application that deals with the site content for the land adjacent to the Renishaw building. The old Newton Oils/recycling building will be demolished to make way for the access and discussions are ongoing to decide if this should be a T-junction or have a roundabout to slow the traffic, this is also the site that will deliver the pedestrian crossing in the Wotton Road/New Street area.

The Cotswold Homes application for 115 houses at Falfield with a Park and Share that would remove vehicle parking around the motorway junction has been given a time extension with Highways England deciding that junction 14 is oversubscribed and there will need to be some remodelling of the junction if any further development is allowed.

The Tortworth Estate has submitted a garden village concept proposal for 3000 houses at Buckover on the A38. This was submitted as part of the Joint Spatial Plan that was sent out for consultation earlier in the year. At this time, it is only a concept proposal and discussions are ongoing with the Council.

We are still vulnerable to these large-scale developments with the local planning authority unable to maintain a 5-year supply of land for housing. This is largely the problem of planning consents being given and the developers not bringing the sites on line quickly enough. This is an area of strategic planning that requires review with the potential for development in this area.

Parish Council

Our absent Chair Mark Rosher (sunning himself in France) has asked me to make this report on his behalf.

The Parish Council is an interesting and essential part of Charfield's life. It meets every second Tuesday in the Month at 19.30 in the Village Hall (no meeting in August). It discusses and deals with many aspects of village life including planning applications, Neighbourhood Plan, Burial Site, Youth Group, Play Area, Footpaths, etc. It liaises with many groups in the village and assists when required, plans the Remembrance Day Parade and is responsible for the memorial. It works with South Glos Council direct or through Councillor John O'Neill. There are even discussions about DOG POO!!!!

At present we have a council with six members when we should have nine. If you would like to consider serving with us (we really are a nice group of people) please come along to a meeting and get a feel for what we do. To serve, you need to be 18 or older and live in the catchment area of the village. (For more information just do a search on “serving as a parish councillor”.)

The Charfield Green and Day House Leaze developments have been given outline planning permission. We await the final plans for both. Our input to these developments is vital and valued. As a council, we are often asked to comment on many aspects of South Glos Council's plans, which we do if relevant.

The Neighbourhood Plan is well under way which is vital for some form of say in what happens in the future.

The Youth Group has been discussed at length to ascertain the value to the village. It would appear that there has been a decline in wanton vandalism since its inception. Note, this does not imply that the members were involved in vandalism in the past.

As I write, the tennis court has been resurfaced with the cost coming from the funds of the Tennis Committee and with help from a local business.

Poppies adorn the area adjacent to the hall. (Just one area which has benefited from the Clean Up Green Up group). The play area had a full inspection recently and passed with just a few recommendations, none of which were urgent.

Our annual Parish meeting went well with many of the local groups who make this village a wonderful place to live represented. They gave a short summary of what they had achieved and were hoping to achieve in the future.

We recently advertised for a Clerk to replace Hannah Saunders who left for a full-time clerk appointment in the Chipping Sodbury area. Thirteen applicants were received of which five were interviewed. The standard was exceptionally high and it proved a difficult decision. Mrs Paula Evans, who had been assisting us on a temporary basis, was chosen and we welcome her to the Council. Paula has served in the past as clerk to Iron Acton and is currently clerk to Rangeworthy.

The future of the Parish Council is not difficult to predict, more and more responsibilities will be passed to us, most may appear to be small but each one requires our time and enthusiasm and local knowledge. Help us to do this, please!!

Mike Cheskin (Vice Chair)

Charfield Open Gardens

Early Spring Bank Holiday 1st and 2nd May

The village Open Gardens event was a tremendous success despite the inclement weather. We had well over 290 visitors and raised over £1750 for the NGS from entrance fees, which goes to a large number of charities including Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care. The £633 we raised from plant sales and sales of teas and cakes went to CUGUC. It helped that we had tea sales in two of our gardens and many visitors decided to sample refreshments at both outlets!

This brings the total over the 4 village garden openings in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 to £15500. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this either by opening their gardens, helping on the day or being paying visitors. And thanks to everyone in the village for accepting this influx of cars and people into the village.

It would be really great if we could include a few more gardens next time. We haven't got a date but 2018 might be a possibility. I know there are more lovely gardens out there so please spill the beans on your neighbours or be bold about your own little green oasis. It must be enjoyable, otherwise we wouldn't do it so often and it is the ideal way to get all those ‘roundtoit’ jobs done in your garden. Opening with lots of other gardens does help it to be fun and stress free.

Hope everyone enjoys their own garden when (if) we get any summer weather.

2nd Wotton (Charfield) Guides

Thursdays at Wotton Baptist Hall 7.30pm

This term, 2nd Wotton Guides have completed our “Get Messy” badge, which was developed and produced by 1st Wotton Senior Section as a fundraising activity. Over the last couple of terms we have completed various messy clauses, including making edible mud pies and creating “salt pictures” using glue covered in salt to blend food colours when the salt draws in the colour.

June saw us in Bristol Harbour having a go at Stand Up Paddleboarding! For the Summer we have planned an Olympic theme. The Guides will be creating their own countries, thinking of laws, languages and which sports they might excel in. We have a silly sports night and team sports evening to come with our closing ceremony happening at Wotton Pool

We have our first ever unit camp happening shortly when 15 Guides will be going away for the weekend. We have some brand new tents thanks to fundraising and gift aid and we plan to try cardboard box cooking, trail making, and crafts with lots of camp cooking and chores.

News from Back Stage

[Graphic] Hello friends, apologies for the absence of my last article, but the publication date was just after our last performance so not much to write home about.

So, on with the show as they say, and what a show we had back in April. “Puss in Boots” was a pleasure to perform and with over 100 people turning out to see us the atmosphere in the hall was fantastic. We had a few firsts: a live behind the scenes video on the Friday night broadcast on Facebook, plus a teaser trailer recorded and edited by Rachel Ash. We also had a fantastic light and sound set-up by local singer/songwriter Steve Yeo.

The show was a great success and we are all now enjoying a well-deserved rest until September when reading starts for our 2017 family panto (more on that in a future issue).

It's not easy going from idea to performance and I really couldn't ask for a better team than I am blessed with. There are too many to name here but on behalf of everyone I want to say a big thank you. CADS is now in its 5th year and aside from a few ups and downs along the way, the future's looking bright and long may it continue.

I was lucky enough to be asked along to a local parish council meeting recently and was overwhelmed by the amount of amazing organizations we have in this little village, and people giving their time to run them.

But I was also saddened to realise that many are struggling with public support so I urge all of you reading this, to come and watch our shows, buy a ticket to the local dance, grab a coffee in the sportsman's lounge or even spare a few hours a month. You really can make a difference.

CADS will soon be using a local studio for its rehearsal and storage needs and is looking for other local bands, dancers etc. to help make use of it. If you are interested please contact me: xxxx @ googlemail for more information.

Charfield School

Staff News
At the beginning of May Charfield School celebrated a marvellous milestone with our special cleaner, Sue Shipton. Sue joined Charfield School an amazing 40 years ago. This makes her the longest serving staff member – EVER! Congratulations Sue – you do an amazing job!

At the end of this year we will be saying farewell to Miss Thorne. Miss Thorne has been a superb member of the team and we wish her every success in her new school.

We are also pleased to be supporting the development of a new CSET school, Lyde Green Primary School, located in the new Lyde Green development near Emerson's Green. To assist in the school's growth, from September Mr Lawday will be Head at both schools and Mrs Miller will lead Early Years.

Mr Higgins and Miss Phillips will join the Charfield team from September.

Other News

We were very excited to see our Log Climber being built. This, again, was made possible by a kind donation from the Parish Council and the Friends for presenting a bid to the council.

The first users of our new log climber were our Silver and Gold Award children. It is such a popular addition to playtime that we have had to put in place a timetable!

Sports Day was made that extra bit special by the help and support we received. This year, help came from KLBS, from Sharon Bates and some Year 10 students. It was lovely to see some old faces helping out and showing what great young adults they have grown into. The Friends (as always ☺) were on duty with the refreshments stall! Thanks chaps! What would we do without them?

Some of the juniors were chosen to visit The Bloodhound SSC Project.

It is the fastest car in the world and a once in a lifetime opportunity for school children to see. We were given an inspirational talk, learning about the history of cars and record-breaking speeds.

It was amazing to find out about The Bloodhound Supersonic Car which has been designed to travel at speeds of over 1000mph (reaching this speed in less than 55 seconds). We were shown around The Bloodhound and then asked to design and make our own mini rocket cars. We worked in pairs and after making the cars, we did a test run by racing them. They reached an astonishing 36 mph, It was an amazing opportunity and wasn't just the children that enjoyed it, our parents did too.

CHATTER HITS THE NEWS-STANDS

After months of hard work from Team Chatter, the finished product was printed and distributed within the 14th April edition of The Gazette. It looked amazing! An electronic version is available on the Gazette website.

Due to the unique way we were approaching the project we drew a lot of attention from the media. BBC Points West ran an article about the project. Did you manage to see it? If not search You Tube for Charfield Chatter.
On publication day the children set up a sales table at the school gate at the beginning and end of the day (to catch as many customers as possible!)

Congratulations to everyone involved in the project and thanks to the professionals for your support throughout. Alicia Garside, Claire Jaggard, Damon Mahoney, Aaron Simms, Tess Wilkinson and our own Miss Thorne!

St John's Charfield

Bishop Rachel has set up a process to define our vision for the Gloucester Diocese for the next few years. As part of this, she is encouraging all the parishes to hold ‘conversations’ about what people want from the church so that the vision is set from the bottom up, not the top down. We would like to know what everyone thinks, not just the regular church attenders. So, as part of this, we have produced some posters and leaflets, which you have hopefully seen around the village, asking you three questions:
• What is your impression of the Church of England in Charfield?
• What is your hope or vision for Charfield in the next 5 years?
• How might the Church be a part of this?

Please do take a moment to pick up one of these leaflets and let us know what you think. The closing date is 20 July.

One of the church's roles from time immemorial has been to support people in our community who are going through difficult times, whether due to bereavement, illness, divorce or other problems. It's often easier to talk it through with someone who isn't a close friend or family, and we are here to help with that. If you would like a sympathetic listener to talk to, just call or email the parish office (see below). Several people from the village are undertaking training this autumn so that we can better help people who need support.

On a more cheerful note, get ready to ‘Ride and Stride’ on 10 September. This is a sponsored walk or ride (bike, horse, penny farthing – whatever takes your fancy) between churches in the area. It's a way to get some exercise, meet like-minded people, discover some fascinating history in a range of church buildings – and raise money too. Half the money you raise goes to our church (which has a waiting list of repairs and improvements) and the other half to the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, which provides grants to churches that need repairs that they can't fund themselves. More details on www.ghct.org.uk.

Don't forget the St James's Day ‘Service for a Summer's Day’ at the old St James's Church at Churchend on 31 July at 10.30. Services at this lovely old church are always popular, not least because of the fabulous acoustics. After the service, Helen & Peter Hill will be hosting a ‘bring and share’ picnic in their paddock opposite the new burial ground, starting about midday.

Cream teas will be held on 14 August from 2.30–4.30pm in the church grounds, where there will also be a display of paintings by local artist Mo Jost. Our Charfield dog walkers' calendar for 2017 should be available there, so watch out for that.

The cream teas and flower display held in June to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday raised over £400.

There was an excellent turnout in April for the Bristol & Avon Police Choir, which raised almost £500.

During August, there is a change in service pattern as follows:
7 August – Rangeworthy 8:00am Said Communion Wickwar 10:30am Benefice Eucharist
14 August – Hillesley 8:00am Said Communion Kingswood 10:30 AM Benefice Eucharist
21 August – Kingswood 8:00am Said Communion Charfield 10:30am Benefice Eucharist
28 August – Wickwar 8:00am Said Communion Rangeworthy 10:30am Parish Eucharist
28 August – Kingswood Chapel 10:30am Churches Together service at Kingswood Chapel ‘Moving On’

Back to normal in September, but note that on 25 September at the 9.30 service, Rachel Bee from Easton Christian family centre/Bristol hospitality network will be here to talk to us about their work with refugees. We gave our Lent lunch money to them and their cause is the subject of the Change 4 Good.

Harvest Sunday will be on 2 October, so watch out for further details of that.

Services at Charfield are taken by Rev'd David Russell, our Curate Rev'd Peter Fewings and our reader Prof Patricia Broadfoot. Plans are in place to recruit a new Assistant Associate Priest to the benefice to replace Chris Mason.

For details of regular services, see our ad in this issue. To contact the clergy, call Rev'd David Russell on 01454 29xxxx or email xxxx @ gmail.com

Memorial Hall

Hello everyone!

At the very start of May, we were hosts to the annual Charfield Community Fete. We are very grateful to everyone who came out and supported this event despite almost being flooded out!

Thanks to a lot of hard work and all of your support (as fellow villagers) we managed to raise over £1000. Thank you so much everyone.

Just a week after the fete, the committee held our Annual General Meeting at which we elected all our officers, trustees and members. Of special note from this meeting is the election of our brand new committee secretary. The main officers of the hall are now as follows

Chairman – Liam Balloch
Vice-Chair – Ruth Balloch
Treasurer – Sam Kelly
Bookings Secretary – Sue Simmons
Secretary – Amanda Pearson

I want to take this opportunity to thank both Tim Hill and Nicola Petty who both stepped down from the committee at this AGM. Tim has been a member of this committee for over 10 years with 7 of those years serving as Chairman. Nicola has been on the committee for just over a year working very hard as both our treasurer and then secretary. Thank you to both of you for your sacrifice and hard work, we are all very grateful.

We are always looking for new trustees and members. There are many ways you can help the committee which do not include attending monthly meetings! If you are looking for a way of getting involved in your community and getting to know people, this is a PERFECT way. If you are interested, email xxxx @ gmail.com

On Sunday 3rd July we were very lucky to have a beautiful sunny day for our pirate treasure hunt. We had a very good turnout of families with children dressed as pirates. Children dug for doubloons and then walked/cycled around the village looking for pirate flags, solving riddles and searching for Long John Silver's wooden leg which was up a tree!

Thank you to all those who attended, we hope that you had an enjoyable time £149 was raised for the hall, thanks for everyone who got involved, and to Margaret for organising the event.

What is happening in the next few months?
For many months now, we have been holding a monthly coffee social morning. This happens on the first Friday of every month in the sportsman's lounge between 9.30 and 11am. Please come along, all are welcome!!

September 17th we will be holding a band night where we will be showcasing the best of our local bands. Nothing simpler than this event, music, drinks and fun. More details to come soon so keep an eye out for posters and details on Facebook.

Events (time to open your diary) –
Rural Arts Event – Friday 30th September, 8pm we are visited by Kit Holmes – Kit's trademark sultry vocals and virtuoso guitar playing have wowed audiences across the UK.

The Observer likened her to Nick Drake and Macy Gray, and Bob Harris and Andy Kershaw have featured Kit on their BBC shows. Her three albums include the legendary, Danny Thompson and incorporate her blues-driven roots with a soul sensibility. Impressive and all the makings of a new British guitar heroine.

Saturday 15th October, 7.30pm – Whalebone are a traditional touring instrumental acoustic guitar and fiddle trio from the rural heart of England. Whalebone's music is a marriage of Celtic folk music and acoustic interpretations of classic guitar rock, combining spellbinding, infectious rhythms with a lively fun presentation.

Pre-School

[Logo: Charfield Pre-School]

The children have been very busy with their role play activities. The girls and boys enjoyed making appointments at the Hairdressers and produced some amazing hairstyles.

Some sick animals attended the Pre-School Vets Surgery and with all the love and care provided by the children, together with the bandages applied, the animals made wonderful recoveries!

At the Airport, the children booked each other in for their flights to sunny destinations, sat in the chairs on their aeroplane and enjoyed every minute.

A Holiday Shop was set up where the children were able to ‘buy’ beach balls, armbands, swimming rings, bucket and spades, goggles and ice cream. Here comes Summer!

The children put on a Puppet Show for their friends and the staff. They have so many hidden talents!

Many Weddings took place during our weddings week, our brides had bouquets, confetti was thrown and presents were given to the bride and groom (unfortunately, they were just empty boxes). During the week, our Manager Debra, picked up tips for her own wedding the following week. Congratulations Mr and Mrs Arthur!

OUTSIDE PLAY
We have been lucky to have had some lovely weather over the last few weeks which has enabled us to make the most of our outside play area. The children love playing on the Pirate Ship, making food in the mud kitchen, and playing in the sandpit. Carrots, beetroot, turnips, broad beans and potatoes have been planted in our vegetable patch by the children. We have also had a car wash and bike wash which the children asked for and enjoyed immensely.

COOKING
Our young chefs have made pizzas, bread and decorated cakes. Well done everyone.

RISING 5S
Our Rising 5s group are the children who will be starting Primary School in September. The children have been very busy starting to prepare for this transition. They have been visiting the school to meet their new Teacher and went for lunch in the school canteen. PE sessions have continued to help the children with dressing and undressing, and activities undertaken in preparation for their Sports Day. The children have also been trying to write their own names and recognise their written names including surname. Well done!

The children have been working together, looking at how things change, talking about changes, and looking at items that float and sink. We purchased a camera that the children can take photos with and the pictures come out instantly, which they love.

We went on our annual trip to Arlingham Farm which the children enjoyed. We were lucky with the weather following a very wet weekend. The children saw chickens, goats, cows, sheep, pigs and newly born piglets.

Regards
Debra, Pre-School Manager

FUNDRAISING
We held a “Bacon Breakfast Bap” morning on 9 July which we hope will have been a success (this being written a week before).

Future Events
Concept Photography
will be at Pre-School on the morning of Saturday, 1 October.

Our Annual Shopping Evening will be held on Friday, 11 November, when you will be able to start your Christmas shopping!

Santa has kindly agreed to visit the village again on Sunday, 11 December. Make sure you lookout for him and his helpers.

September 2016 Intake
Charfield Pre-School has some places available – please contact Debra for further information.

September 2017 Waiting List
If you wish to put your child's name on the waiting list, please contact Debra.

Kind regards,

Out of School Club

[Logo: Charfield Out of School Club]

With just weeks left before the end of the school year, we are gearing up for a fun packed summer holiday, filled with interesting activities. The staff have all worked extremely hard planning the Summer Programme. Our topic will be “The Olympics” which will include lots of games challenges, sporting competitions and arts and crafts from Brazil. We will also be booking some special visitors to the club to organise sessions with the children, including Zoo Lab.

If your child is interested in attending any of these sessions, please contact the club. Spaces are filling up fast as we do take children from several surrounding schools.

The club is still keen to recruit volunteers from the local area who would like to help in holiday times, either by showing the children a specific skill or hobby they enjoy or even if they just want to get involved with the activities already offered at the Out of School Club.

We would love to hear from you. All volunteers would need to be aged 18+ and prepared to undergo an enhanced DBS (previously CRB) check as is required for all individuals who work closely with children.

If you know of any new families who would like to use our service or find out more, please contact us at the club. Follow the link from the school website: www.charfieldschool.org.uk The club is open to children up to the age of 13 so even if your children are moving onto secondary school they are still welcome after school and in the holidays, subject to availability.

May we take this opportunity to wish everyone in the village a very happy and relaxing summer holiday, and say a huge thank you to everyone who continues to use the club, or who has supported us with our fundraising activities. Good luck to all our families with children who are moving on to other schools. We hope to see lots of new, as well as some familiar faces, in the autumn.

Finally a big thank you to the staff – Pat, Georgina, Jo, Anne and Philippa for continuing to make the club an outstanding facility for our village.

Community Engagement Forum

One of the best kept secrets in Charfield is what was called the Safer Stronger Group and is now called The Community Engagement Forum.

The forum covers the following areas: Charfield, Tortworth, Falfield, Rangeworthy, Wickwar and parts of Cotswold Edge north and west of A46.

We meet at Cromhall Chapel. The next meeting is 6th October at 7.30p.m. Currently the meetings are held every four months.

In attendance at the meetings are:
• Avon and Somerset Police.
• Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue
• Representatives of Parish councils
• Our District Councillor John O'Neill
• South Glos Council representative
• Interested members of public.

Anyone can come along and bring a subject up for discussion and investigation. If it is decided at the meeting to forward this to the relevant persons or authorities, IT IS DONE!

Matters raised at the June meeting:

Devils Lane, Charfield. Condition of Road
Wotton Road, Charfield. Verge Parking.
Little Bristol Lane, Charfield. Pavement Parking.
Speed of vehicles in Charfield area.

Items resolved at the June meeting relating to Charfield:

Road safety concerns at the Little Bristol Lane/Wotton Road junction. The official reply is “No road safety issue at this junction”. This matter is now closed.

Accident/Fatality on Downs Road, Charfield/Wickwar. Double white lines suggested. The matter is to be debated by Parish Councils and then discussed with an SGC Highways engineer.

Now the secret is out, please use the forum to make our village and the surrounding area a safer more pleasant area to live and work in.

Any matter can be brought to my attention by e-mail at xxxx @ tiscali.co.uk

Marilyn's Bit

[Graphic: Peter Pan] I couldn't work out why Black Friday was called so. I thought it was because, that day, people were the most depressed. If it was the opposite, why wasn't it called Gold Sparkling Saturday?

I was searching in the directory for Highfield Garden Centre, Whitminster, when I found the High Commissioner for Pakistan. How amazing is that?

The ongoing saga of the photo in the lobby:
Do you recall my issue with the over-pixelated photo of me in the school entrance, and I tried to jazz myself up a bit with magazine cut-outs of Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts' hair and then Sophie's intervention. It was a good photo but a bit safe. At this stage of the game, school entrance or not, you have to do your best. We managed to get across to see our Lawrence and, if I say so myself he took some rather fab photos of his dear Mum, yippee. Suffice to say, you can guess what is now portrayed, the only ‘school snap’ taken in a New York dining room and in front of a window. Not one member of staff has noticed.

I suppose you could say, sadly, that my lovely daughter has got one of ‘my conditions’. We battle with the necessity of domesticity. Don't get me wrong, where necessary, everything is sparkling, but if you are in the middle of an exceedingly great book, what comes first, the next ten pages, or the vac. Mind you, Soph's great recent excuse was her making twenty unicorn hats/headgear for her Rainbow troop. A couple of months ago, I passed a comment to our lovely granddaughter Millie. Right, hold that sentence. A few weeks ago, two little girls moved in next door to them. Whilst playing, they had obviously seen fit to enter the ‘busy’ establishment. We are not quite sure what their ‘homely palace’ looks like but they must have passed a comment. Next, as thankfully overheard by Sophie and beautifully expressed by our five-year-old, “It's because I've got more toys than Toys ‘R’ Us.” That's my girl.

Well I'm delighted to say that I'm quite on the case with this and will end with some good advice. We all get a bit fed up and, in many cases, justifiably so, however I'm giving you three snippets with giggle factor. Just watch Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom, Peppa Pig and Shaun the Sheep. Get past the supposed viewers ages and enjoy fantastic scripts and brilliant facial expressions. My Mum's dear friend, aged 91, in London, gets on the phone and says, “Quick, Hilda, Shaun's on in five minutes.”

Well my lovelies, mind how you go and have a Happy Summer, love Maz xx
