“Spring” by E Lucia Turnbull

“My dear,” said Mrs Wren, “if Mrs Cuckoo comes to call,
I really think it would be best to see her in the hall,
Explaining that our house it is so very, very small,
We have no room for paying guests, or any guests at all.”

Litter Pick

Thank you to Mark Rosher, Judith Law and anyone else from the Parish Council involved in organising the litter pick on 1 April. Despite the showers (which weren't due until later in the day!) there was a really good turn-out of villagers of all ages. A good number of bags were filled so for now at least the verges, hedgerows and streets are looking clean and shiny. It's a shame of course that we have to do this and that the people responsible for chucking the rubbish down in the first place, especially round the park and near the shop, continue to create this blot on the village.

Hopefully there will be another one later this year – check the Facebook forum and www.charfield.org for details.

South Glos Council

The threat of massive development still looms large over Charfield as we await the outcome of the consultation of the Joint Spatial Plan that identified Charfield as a strategic development location for a further one thousand homes. Those who responded to the consultation will have received a reply recently with a link to the responses to the consultation and key points arising from the JSP. For those who did not participate but would like to see progress so far the link is:

www.jointplanningwofe.org.uk

It is clear that there was a good response from Charfield residents and stakeholders to the consultation outlining problems in public transport, sustainability, private car reliance, employment opportunities and our highways network to name but a few. Clearly this is not a done deal at this time with many doubting that the A38/M5 corridor could sustain the levels of proposed development. Highways England have suggested that alternative sites should be considered as Charfield would be one of the areas that would be a challenge to develop sustainably. We have to temper this with a sense of realism though, as we know that for any site discounted, there would need to be an an alternative as the housing numbers have to be delivered.

The next stage will see the draft Joint Spatial Plan produced in the summer followed by a further consultation. The final plan is produced in the autumn and it will then proceed to public inspection stage where it will be reviewed by the Government's Planning Inspectorate. Also identified in the document are the developers who have submitted an interest in developing areas of Charfield. For Charfield north (to the rear of New Street and Wotton Road) this is Bloor Homes (250 houses) and for Charfield south (the area behind the Pear Tree stretching to Little Bristol) this is the Charfield Landowners Consortium + CEG.

Bloor homes is readily identifiable but the latter is not so well known. It is made up of the owners of the land concerned and a company known as Commercial Estates Group who will work with the landowners to promote the land and deliver the infrastructure if planning is approved. You may have noticed the various surveys completed on this land and Wotton Road/Little Bristol Lane late last year.

CEG have been in contact and met with me along with various stakeholders and residents in the village. I believe that I would speak for all residents in Charfield when I say that our ultimate aim is to resist mass development and that we feel will destroy the fabric of this village as we know it. But in the real world, we have to be pragmatic and realise that if this development does come then there are infrastructure projects that we will need and top of that list would be a new school. The current school is unlikely to meet the demands of the developments that are already underway. There are other infrastructure projects that will be required, but these plans are only tentative at this time whilst we await the outcome of the JSP.

Many residents continue to ask whether the re-opening of Charfield Railway station is realistic. I have reported previously that Gloucester County Council commissioned Amey Rail to assess the route between Gloucester and Bristol Parkway. That report revealed that a new station at Charfield would be viable, however it would be for South Gloucestershire Council to make the business case for a new station. The latest news we have is that in January, the West of England Joint Transport Board commissioned Network Rail to assess the route, signalling, loops at strategic points and the potential for a business case for two further stations on the line. Three locations were identified with Charfield in the mix. The work is expected to take up to a year with a report around the end of the year.

South Gloucestershire is now part of the devolved West of England Combined Authority and will thus take more responsibility from Government for infrastructure and housing etc. The inaugural meeting of the combined authority took place on 1st March and the election of the Metro Mayor will take place on 4th May. We should expect to see candidates making themselves known to the electorate in coming weeks.

A brief roundup of the current major developments in Charfield and surrounding area is as follows. Day House Leaze adjacent to the school: outline planning permission was approved last year for the access arrangements and 64 homes on this site. The reserved matters application that deals with the site content is still under consideration, and if approved, the anticipated start date is July. Warners Court between the above site and the railway bridge: outline planning application for 121 homes under consideration. No decision at this time. Moorslade Lane, Falfield: 115 homes and park and share facility for 100 cars. Interestingly this application was recommended for approval by the Council but overturned and refused by the development control committee as an unsustainable location. The developer is expected to appeal the decision.

Keep Charfield Tidy Please!!!

Last week, I picked up all the rubbish between the entrance to Woodlands Road and Rose Cottage on Little Bristol Lane. I picked up THREE dustbin bags full in total.

☹ Dog poo bags 13 (unlucky for Charfield)
☹ Cans 11
☹ Plastic bottles 6
☹ Glass bottles 3
☹ Paper too numerous to count but lots of sweet and lunchtime-type packaging
☹ There was actually a pile of filled dog poo bags in one place – 5 in total!

A lot of litter for quite a short stretch of road.

One day later:
☹ 1 dog poo bag
☹ 2 lots poo left on pavement
☹ 2 cans
☹ 1 glass bottle
☹ 3 pieces litter

Please, please help keep this a village lovely! don't drop litter and poo bags, and please don't put litter into hedges or into trees so it cannot be collected.

THANK YOU!!
A disappointed villager.

Charfield Parish Council

Parish Council work is a strange creature to master. Legislation is continually being updated with edicts filtering down from central Government – sometimes it is difficult to keep up with it all. Mention the word ‘Localism’ to any Parish Clerk and you will see their eyes roll heavenwards! It can be utterly frustrating at times, having to make sure that the Council continues to function within its legal parameters, but at the same time, so fulfilling when trying to ensure that facilities provided within the area continue so that Parishioners can live in, and enjoy the benefits of a beautiful rural community.

We began the year with the Annual Budget Meeting where the Precept for the 2017/18 financial year was agreed. I am pleased to report that the Precept request to South Gloucestershire Council remains the same as last year – £55,700. This has been achieved through prudent financial management of the budget. A number of Grants were made to community organisations – Charfield Amateur Dramatic Society, Friends of Charfield Primary School, the Village Fair, Dementia Group and CUGUC – so that they can all continue to do their sterling work around the Parish. Charfield Parish Council is now at full strength after the co-option of three new Councillors – so welcome aboard Alex Threlfall, Tony Parker and Paul Garside.

Date for your Diary – Wednesday 24th May 2017 – Annual Parish Meeting, Charfield Memorial Hall commencing at 7.30pm – Everyone welcome!

A few planning applications gave cause for concern during the first couple of months of 2017. First were the two applications at the Appletrees site for the removal of a personal condition. There was some confusion over the wording of these applications and the potential implications if the applications were approved. The Parish Council was also concerned that the application suggested the SGC Planning Office ‘supported’ the application. It has now been acknowledged by SGC that the wording of the applications could have been better. At the time of writing, a decision is awaited.

Secondly, an application was received from Barratt Homes for 121 new dwellings and a retail unit. This application was submitted by Barratt despite a letter being sent to them from South Gloucestershire Council Planning Department, suggesting that until the Local Plan had been adopted, piecemeal development should not be an option. The Parish Council robustly responded to this application, citing amongst many things issues with access to the proposed site, prematurity, inappropriate affordable content, lack of transport links/employment opportunities and density of development. Again, at the time of writing this article, a decision is awaited from South Gloucestershire Council.

The third application was for the change of use of 10 Avon Road to a Chinese Takeaway. Again, this application was strongly objected to after listening to the concerns of parishioners and neighbours.

Work on the Charfield Neighbourhood Plan continues and a couple of new volunteers have joined the Steering Committee. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey questionnaire and return it to us. We had a good response, with over 350 questionnaires being returned. You may not think that was many, but in the world of Neighbourhood Planning anything over 30% is a good response! Recently it has been difficult to see a way forward as the Charfield Neighbourhood Plan will have to sit within the hierarchical documents of the South Gloucestershire New Local Plan which in turn will have to dovetail with the West of England Joint Spatial and Joint Transportation Plans neither of which have yet been drafted, let alone adopted. Despite this unknown 4territory, the Steering Committee is now at the stage of reviewing all of the comments and tick boxes within the questionnaire in order to develop the Neighbourhood Plan Policies.

Parish Councillors undertake weekly inspections of the play equipment in the Playing Fields. As the warmer months approach, if anyone sees a problem with any of the pieces of play equipment please contact the Clerk on 07704 72xxxx. The play area has the lovely addition of the sand pit – a wonderful place for our younger residents to play and enjoy themselves. The sand pit level is looking a little low, so we will be re-filling over the next couple of months. In 2016 we refilled the sand pit twice – a total of two tonnes of sand!

By the time you read this article the Parish Council will be in the middle of their annual audit period. Each year Parish Council books have to undergo an independent internal audit which is then sent to a Government appointed external auditor to ensure that procedures have been adhered to and money wisely spent. There is a specific period of time when Parish electors can inspect the figures – this is called “The Exercise of Public Rights” and usually takes place each year between the middle of June through to the middle of July. In the spirit of openness and transparency, I would like to let parishioners know that any financial document held by the Parish Council is open to inspection during any part of the year. If you cannot find the information you want in the Minutes or on the web site, please contact me by email or phone and I can provide you with copies.

Clean Up Green Up Charfield

As you may have read in the last issue, Yvette decided to take a break from Clean Up Green Up Charfield, after being the group's very capable Chairlady since its formation. We are pleased that she has agreed to stay involved with some of our working groups. You may also spot an exciting upgrade to the bus stop by the Primary School in the next couple of months – one of Yvette's projects.

In January I was elected as the new Chair and I would like to reiterate the group's aim to try and brighten up the village by gardening, planting and clearing up where we can – the clue is in the name!

Clean Up Green Up Charfield holds monthly working groups on the hill from the roundabout down to the Viewpoint where we installed a new seat a year or so ago. Other groups keep the school frontage looking good and work on the land at the corner of Little Bristol Lane. This is a difficult piece of ground and we hope to improve it this year before the beautiful poppies appear.

You may have seen lots of little purple crocuses popping up all round the village at the start of March. We were donated 5000 crocus corms by the Rotary Club of Dursley as part of their Purple for Polio awareness campaign. We spent several hours back in October planting them and I have seen lots coming up along footpaths and in green areas all over the village. I hope they will sprout again in coming years. Thanks to those that helped plant them all.

If you would like to join our band of helpers, you would be very welcome. Just drop me your details on an email to xxxx @ gmail.com. You don't have to be available every time – we just send an email when something is coming up and we supply the tools, etc.

We are really hoping to find someone interested in starting a village Christmas Tree group. If you are interested, please get in touch. We would then hope to identify a place for the tree, and get the necessary permissions and funds in place in time for December.

Whether you are involved with our group, have your own garden to tend to, or even just a small window box – I hope you enjoy seeing our village, and your own plants, getting greener and flowering as Spring and Summer approach.

Sue Simmons – Chair of CUGUC

The Royal British Legion

The Royal British Legion branches Wotton under Edge and Charfield are in danger of closing

Both branches lead their respective Remembrance Day services with their standards (flags), hold two fund raising events per year and help our Poppy Appeal Organisers raise significant amounts for the Poppy Appeal. Every penny given to the Poppy Appeal goes to those in need who are, or have, defended our country and liberty. Our membership fees pay administration and other costs including paying for the Wotton Silver Band to lead the Remembrance Day parade.

Membership and committee meeting attendance are decreasing and the present committee has an average age the wrong side of 75!

Closure is but a hair's breadth away …

There are many ex-Service men, women and families in the area and your support is needed urgently. Please help to keep your local Royal British Legion branch alive. Membership is open to serving, ex-service and non-service, men and women, young and old.

Recognising that holding meetings at 11am prevents our younger ex-service and general community members from attending, we have agreed to hold 3 trial evening meetings to test public support. These meetings will be held at 19.00 in The Star Inn, Market Street, Wotton-under-Edge on the following Thursdays:

April 20th, May 18th and June 15th

Without additional support we have little choice but to close both branches. The standards of both branches would then be laid up and not be available to lead the Remembrance Day parades.

Charfield Amateur Dramatic Society

After every show, I tell myself that's it, take a break now Steve, try something different – a new experience like Zumba perhaps? You have been performing on and off for over twenty years now.
So my mind was made up and I was walking home across the park and I hear my name being called. It's our local resident actor Tristan Gemmill and his daughter. Tristan has been a strong supporter of our village drama group since we began (even took the time to pop down and give us a few words of wisdom before our first performance). But this was all about the smiling face of his daughter saying I was funny.

She was, of course, referring to the special performance we gave to Stone Primary School (all 95 of them and the P.T.A.) of our last production of Robinson Crusoe. I have performed for many children over the years in countless colourful costumes, but nothing can come close to the sheer energy and thrill 95 primary school children in one room shouting, “He's behind you!” can make you feel!
So once again I find myself penning our next pantomime for 2018 bigger and better than ever before. For all those of you that have never experienced a CADS show, I ask this simple question – why not?

CADS has grown and adapted over the years, always trying something new and fresh. But we have never ventured far from our original purpose – to enjoy ourselves and create something fun and positive. When I am asked what my favourite show has been, I really can't say. I loved the pace of hiding the dead body of the vicar in More Tea Vicar. But also I so enjoyed the ‘Who's on First?’ sketch made famous by Abbott and Costello that we adapted for Aladdin (how we pulled it off I will never know).

7These are experiences that money just can't buy and are completely unique to the moment. CADS will be taking a little break for the summer while we plan our future shows and venues, but you can still find us on our Facebook page: Charfield Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS). We are always looking for new members on and off stage. Even if acting is not your thing and you're just looking for a place to enjoy yourself and hang out in a positive atmosphere, we have a place for you.

So to all my fellow CADS family and everyone who has supported us, I say thank you ☺ It has been a pleasure to perform for/with you and I hope to see you again soon.
Have a great summer, xx
Steve Pickin

Well Done Charfield and Thank You!

Thank you to the people of Charfield who made my afternoon teas so successful!!!!

There have been a lot of sad faces in and around Charfield lately due to all the new proposed housing developments making the future uncertain for our village. To have an event such as this really brought out the community spirit again.

The atmosphere was buzzing and the result was very fruitful. I had teams of willing bakers making lots of amazing and delicious cakes and many hands at the helm to help set up and decorate the village hall, creating a relaxed cafe atmosphere. Then there were the many people behind the scenes who were washing up, preparing the platters of delightful sandwiches, cakes and scones and making endless cups of tea and coffee. All of which were delivered by my five wonderful young waiters.

The room was filled with the smell of delicious food and pleasant conversation. Lots of delightful comments were made on the day and on social media afterwards asking for another. I would like to give thanks to the local companies who donated food and raffle prizes, to my star bakers, helpers and the big support from you, the community.

Together we raised £1,200 to go to the three very worthwhile charities: Breast Cancer Care; Ovarian Cancer Action; and Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust.

So special thanks to: Alison Howard, Alison Trueman, Alison White, Andrew Cope, Angie Searle, Carole Griffiths, Emma Cope, Emily Troy, Emily Wilcox, Hannah Searle, Helen England, Jess Cope, Jo Tymms, Kirsty Rummels, Lauren Kershaw, Lisa Wiles, Luke Wilcox, Margaret Leonard, Noreen Rogers, Sue Bird, Sue Simmons, Tina Rickwood, Yvonne Kershaw.

Many thanks from me, Liane

Charfield Pre-School

Role Play: The children have been dressing-up in Police uniforms, arresting the teachers and putting them in jail! Some of the children attended the “Police Station” and had their fingerprints taken.

The Pre-School Hairdressers has again been open for business. This activity is enjoyed by both the girls and boys. They enjoy looking at the pictures in hair magazines, improving the teachers' hairstyles and taking their money!

The children have dressed up as Pirates, made telescopes, searched for gold coins, put together a pirate treasure map and taken part in many more pirate related activities.

In the Garden: Spring has arrived as the daffodils and crocuses are in bloom. The garlic is growing well and the children have recently planted carrots, poppies and sunflowers. The children have painted wind chimes and these have been placed around the garden. We are making the most of the good weather by spending a lot of time playing outside, which the children enjoy.

Rising 5s visits. Alice and Wendy from Chipping Manor Dental Practice played a game with the children by getting them, in turn, to place an item of food under the “Good Food” or “Bad Food” heading on a board. The children were very knowledgeable! Everyone then went into groups and practised brushing a set of teeth. When Alice and Wendy left, they kindly gave a goody bag to each child. Thank you and see you next year!

PC Lee Bainbridge and PCSO Haley Bromley visited in March. They spoke to the children about the importance of holding a grownup's hand when out and about and by a road, and if they became separated from an adult whilst out shopping, they should approach someone wearing a store uniform or a Policeman or Policewoman. This information was a good reminder for the children, as they had recently discussed safety during a circle time session in Pre-School. Lee and Haley had brought a Police van to the school and the children were able to sit in the cage (for “baddies”) in the back of the van and also see the blue lights and headlights flashing which would be used when responding to an incident. Thank you for an enjoyable visit!

In March we had a visit from Alison White and Teasel (a very well behaved dog) from Vale Vets. The 8children took it in turns to listen to Teasel's heartbeat, watched as Alison expertly bandaged Teddy's arm, and dressed up in hats, operating gowns, masks and gloves. Alison told the children about the different animals she treats and the children told her about the pets they have at home. Thank you Alison!

PE: PE sessions are taking place on a Monday afternoon, in preparation for the children attending Primary School in September. This Term, the children have taken part in Yoga sessions and are now experts at the mountain, tree, lion, giraffe, flamingo, snake, butterfly and (ending with) relaxation pose. We are very impressed at the recollection of the poses each week – well done everyone!

Mothers' Day Afternoon Tea (Rising 5s): Every Rising 5 Mother was invited to have afternoon tea with their child/children in Pre-School. The children were busy baking on the Monday before Mothers' Day. They made jam tarts, lemon curd tarts, cheese scones and a Victoria Sandwich, which were put on individual plates for each mum. Having been taught a special song before the Mum's arrived, they then performed it brilliantly in front of all the parents. The children presented their Mum's with the Mothers' Day cards and flowers they had made. The event was well attended and enjoyed by everyone.

Easter Bonnet Parade: Our annual Easter Bonnet Parade will take place on Friday, 7 April 2017. We are sure that the Easter Bonnet's that will be on parade will be magnificent as in previous years.

Friday Sessions: We currently have a couple of vacancies for a Friday morning session. Contact Debra (see below) if you are interested.

From September 2017, Charfield Pre-School will be open on a Friday afternoon, 11.30am until 2pm. To put your child's name on the waiting list, please contact Debra Arthur, Manager, on 01454 26xxxx or email xxxx @ gmail.com for more details.

Marilyn's Bit

What did we do before wet wipes? ‘My Baby loves Tesco’ (other brands are available) wipes removed coffee stains from my lounge carpet, got some hard water marks from the bathroom tap, are fantastic if you need a quick Glastonbury wash and can't be bothered to shower, (I didn't say that of course) AND all before you've whooshed round the darling baby's bottom!!!

Last Sunday I had the great privilege of seeing some wonderful dancers in a show at the Olympus Theatre at Stoke Gifford. They are all members of the Ruth Osborne School of Dance in Wotton and I went to support the dancing pupils from our school. They were absolutely fantastic.

I'm on a bit of a school theme this time. I was listening to a reader. His book was How to Train Your Dragon. He was on Chapter 5 and the title was A CHAT WITH AN OLD WRINKLY. No comment.

There's a stock answer from our little darlings when they have punched someone where they shouldn't, 9whacked them around the head or some other unacceptable action. Last week, a little sweetie came up to me and said that “she had called --- stupid, but I did it by an accident.” Aren't they wonderful?

Many years ago, a young pupil in Year 2 gave me his metal Spiderman pencil case. Last month the hinge on the lid bent and snapped off. Brilliantly, I met his Mum up the road and told her about my gift. Apparently, lovely Luke is now 19 and at Uni. Wow, some things can last. So, next part of the story. I bought a vinyl type squidgy one covered in watermelons. I was sitting next to a pupil in the infants when he exclaimed, “get that thing away from me, I'm allergic to melon.” I explained it was plastic and wouldn't hurt. “Well,” he said, “if my lips swell up it will be your fault.” Aren't they gorgeous?

Have a wonderful leapy abouty Spring.

Love Maz xx

Charfield Luncheon Club

The most recent lunch to be held at the Memorial Hall on March 29th marked a very special occasion, albeit rather a sad one. After forty years of being the mainstay, Ros Nieboer has retired. Ros first got involved all those years ago when she volunteered to drive and collect less abled members and quickly became an invaluable member of the team. She went on to become the principal organiser – planning, shopping, organising the helpers and, of course, cooking and serving many hundreds, probably thousands, of delicious lunches. Her roast dinners are legendary!

The club members presented her with a bouquet of flowers and many expressions of appreciation. Her team of helpers sat down to their last lunch with her and wished her well in her new home. They marked the occasion by arranging to take Ros out for a lunch that she didn't have to plan, shop for or cook! And the good news is that she has volunteered to make the Christmas puddings again – definitely something to look forward to.

In the early years Ros lived in Cromhall but she moved into Wotton a good number of years ago and is now moving to the Pershore area to be nearer her family. We all wish her a very happy and well deserved retirement.

From her team of helpers.

Tea & Chat at St James

You are invited to a get-together at St James Church, Churchend Lane, Charfield on 9th April 2017. We will serve light refreshments between 2.30 and 3.00.

It will be an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful place and if the weather is fine you can take a stroll in the churchyard. Although The space is very beautiful and atmospheric, you will notice that the tombs, headstones and walls are very dilapidated and in need of some urgent repair. So we want to see if there is enough support to form a ‘Friends of St James Group’.

At 3.00pm we will encourage you to take a seat and listen to our ideas to try to help this beautiful village asset.

Please share this invite with friends, family and groups that you think might be interested in this project.

Thanks so much. We look forward to meeting you on the day.

1st Woodend Scout Group

I think it's been a year since our last report possibly due to a 12 day trip to Malta with the Scouts, older Cubs and a couple of Explorers and Young Leaders.

This was a very successful trip staying at a new (to us) camp site on the island and an enjoyable hike and sleepover with the Fgura Scouts, our Maltese Scout friends. Shortly after the trip overseas, we attended a 3 night camp at the Avon Scouts Jamboree, Westerleigh – again enjoyable but incredibly tiring, but we did get to see our Chief Scout Bear Grylls.

Over the summer we have been updating the toilet block at the Avening Green site. The girls now have toiletS, no mistake on the capital ‘S’! They have 2 toilets and a shower and the boys now have 2 showers, and yes they will use them! We've also updated the electrics and plumbing including a new boiler which will provide the wash areas with hot water on demand – a luxury for us. Now, we just need to get the paint pots out.

I missed the Autumn term due to illness and am slowly getting back into the swing of things. I started back with the reopening of our second Beaver colony in January, which meets on Wednesday evenings.

Welcome to Heather, our new assistant Beaver leader. Before she joined, we had so many over 6s on our waiting list with no spaces even in the surrounding groups, which by the way now includes a brand new group: 1st Wickwar! We still recommend that children are added to our list as early as possible to secure a place as the new colony is quickly filling up.

There are spaces in our cub and scout sections so if 10you know of anyone wanting to join us, please use the contact form on our website www.1stwoodend.scoutsites.org.uk or email me at xxxx @ gmail.com.

Planned activities for this year include a beaver sleepover, beaver and cub fun day at Woodhouse Park, Strategy camp for Scouts, Cub and Scout camps at Avening Green, a trip further afield for the Scouts which is a secret!

From September we will start planning our next trip to Malta which will be over the Easter break 2019. By this time I will have spent nearly 20 years in the group, which I think is quite sufficient for one person, so If anyone would like to help me with the role with the intention of taking over please drop me a line and we can have a chat. We also need a new Chairperson so if anyone is available or would like more information please get in touch.

Yours in Scouting. Sandra Carnegie (Raksha)

Our next planned update is new flooring in the kitchen so watch this space!

This year we will also be putting on an evening of FREE entertainment for all the family, so keep the date marked, more details will come soon!

Meet your Hall Committee: Last month we met Margaret, the committee's longest serving Trustee. This time around it falls to me to answer these questions.

Name: Liam Balloch

How many members in your family? I live in Charfield with my wife of 8 years, Ruth (you may know her from Charfield Petrol Station) who also serves on our committee as the Vice Chairman. I am the youngest of 6 boys, I have 16 nieces and nephews.

Work? I currently work as a HR Officer for a mental health charity in Bristol, I have worked for this charity in different roles for the past 6.5 years. I am also a fully qualified counsellor/therapist and I run a small private practice.

11How long have you lived in the village/Where did you live before? We have lived in the village now for 4 and a bit years, we previously lived in Wickwar. My home town is Weston-Super-Mare. I was born in Southmead Hospital (fun fact – when I was born I was 24 inches long … yes that is 2 feet tall!).

How long have you volunteered as a Trustee of the Memorial Hall? I joined the committee at the end of 2010 as the Booking Secretary. I then served as a Trustee for a few years, and have served as the Chairman for the past 3 years.

What do you enjoy most about being on the committee? I enjoy making a difference in the community and I enjoy being able to organise events that bring the community together. In an odd way, I enjoy the meetings as they are a really good way of getting to know people I would not normally have met.

What's your future vision for the Hall? I would love
• to see the hall become a central community hub that is open all day long with activities happening all the time, rather than sporadically as they are at the moment.
• to see it become part of every villager's week in some way, even if it is them dropping their children off to activities at the hall.
• to see the hall being financially self-sustaining.

What is your favourite thing about living in Charfield?
I love being so close to the countryside and yet so close to a busy and exciting city centre. I grew up in a seaside town, so, if I am honest, I also love that we are not near the sea!

Charfield Memory Group

THANK YOU! First of all, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the Rock and Roll dance at the Village Hall on Saturday 25th March. It was the first time that Dementia Connections has teamed up with the Memorial Hall and Playing Fields for a fundraiser, and I have to say it was one fabulous night!

From the people who came and danced the night away, to the generous people who donated raffle prizes and bought the tickets, a thank you to all. Together we raised a fantastic £462.50 which will go towards activities and materials in our local Memory Groups.

A special thank you also to The Memorial Hall and Playing Fields whose team of volunteers provided a superb light supper. We really couldn't have done it without you all!

Wickwar Session: We will be holding another Pop-up event on Monday 24th April from 1–3pm at the Congregational Chapel in Wickwar for people to drop in, find out a little bit more about what we do, and to let us know what services you might like to see in the village of Wickwar. We will also be joined by Jon Stockwell (Dementia Advisor, Alzheimer's Society)

For more information, contact either:
Chris on 07870 33xxxx or
Amanda on 07814 69xxxx.

Group Sessions: Our groups now run on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month in THE SPORTSMAN's LOUNGE at CHARFIELD MEMORIAL HALL from 10am to 1pm.
The group is still free to attend, although donations are welcomed.

As well as providing a safe and welcoming place for people living with memory problems, did you know that we also offer Carers Support? If you look after a friend or family member on a regular basis, then that includes you. Why not come along for a chat and some information – or even just for a quiet coffee, with people who understand.

Dates for The Diary: The next dates on the fundraising calendar for Dementia Connections are:
Party in the Parc: 17th June, Wotton Under Edge.
Charfield Community Fete: 29th July, Charfield Playing Fields.

Please do come and join us, where we will be showcasing some of the beautiful gifts which our friends in the group have made, and providing some information on local services.

So until next time, may we wish you all a very happy and peaceful Easter break.

Best wishes, Amanda & Christine

Friends of Charfield School

Since the New Year it has been a relatively quiet time for fundraising events, after such a busy (but very enjoyable) end of 2016. The disco at the school was our first event of 2017. We had a great turn out from the children with over 150 children (& some adults) having a boogie! We had a tuck shop which went down very well. The disco was a great success and we were able to raise just over £280 profit on the night. All the children who attended were a credit to both the school and their parents as their behaviour was exemplary. Thanks to everyone who helped with the preparation and running of the disco.
We have been looking at which other events we can run this year. There has been some uncertainty over whether we are able to hold our successful annual 12fireworks display with the potential work starting on the Day House Leaze site (field next to the school). This is due to the possible “run off” of the fireworks, depending on wind direction, which historically would have gone into the field next to the school but could go into the residential area once the houses are built. However it currently looks likely the fireworks will be going ahead this year as usual, watch this space! We are in discussions with our fireworks provider, along with other relevant parties, to see if we can get some sort of agreement to secure the fireworks for years to come.

The Friends have recently received a large request for funding from the school. Although there are a number of bigger projects underway, the Friends also fund the little extras that the school might not normally be able to afford. This request covers the majority of subject areas in the school including Maths, Music, History, Science, PE, Outdoor Learning, etc. Your children should start seeing some nice new equipment in the next month or two which is all thanks to the support we receive from you all and the committee.
With the funds that have been raised so far this year, we are hoping to start a number of initiatives over the coming months.
The school would like to start building a mound around the adventure playground. This is intended as a replacement for the fence which rotted and become a constant maintenance problem.

The Wendy house needs a revamp including a new paint job, roof and some climbing apparatus over it.
The amphitheatre project is still in progress and the Friends have written some grant funding requests to help find funding for it. This will be an exciting outdoor learning area which all the children will be able to enjoy and use.

If you feel you have some ideas about potential future events please get in touch as we would be delighted to hear about events you feel would help support our local school and also bring the community together. In the meantime, another way that you can help The Friends is through Easy Fund Raising. It couldn't be simpler – you just need to register using the following link: www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ causes/ friendsofcharfieldschool. There are over 2000 retailers listed including Amazon, John Lewis, M&S, Ebay and Argos etc. so the next time you are online please try it out. We have already managed to raise over £1,800 to date through this scheme!

We are very much in need of volunteers to help at our events and on the committee. If you are a parent or guardian of a child at the school (or you'd just like to lend a hand) and you feel you can spare a couple of hours a month, please get in touch. There is no obligation, so even if you would just like to get an idea of the sort of work we do, please come along to one of our meetings – you will be made very welcome.

We also have a Facebook page where we post general information along with dates for events, committee meetings, etc. Please join our page at: https://www.facebook.com/ Friendsofcharfieldprimaryschool/ Our next committee meeting is being held on Tuesday 25th April.

I look forward to keeping you informed of our future events. Until then, once again, a very big thank you to everyone who has worked with and supported the Friends.

Rob Barter – Chair; The Friends of Charfield Primary School. xxxx @ hotmail.com. 07816 27xxxx.

Charfield Primary School

In Year 4 this term, we have been learning all about Easter. We recently had a visit from Reverend Russell who told us the story of Easter and at the end, we sang along to the song ‘Above my head’.

We then went to St John's church and found out about how Easter is celebrated in the church. We discussed important features of the Easter service and special objects used during this time. We then did some drawings of the architecture and other decorative features within the church. Finally, we made some Easter story wreaths to retell the Easter story.

If you haven't already heard the exciting news, Charfield Primary School has its very own dragon who lives under the school and eats our lost property!

For the last two weeks of term, the whole school has been studying the exciting world of dragons and creating some amazing artwork! A selection of this artwork will be showcased in Berkeley Castle during their special Dragon Easter Weekend from Good Friday 14th April until Easter Monday 17th April. The children have received a free ticket to this event (with an accompanying paying adult). All the children have created scales that will be added to a whole school dragon which will also be sent to the castle for the Dragon Easter weekend.

Many thanks for your continued support and resource donations, which have helped make this all possible!

The Railway Tavern

I expect most of you have seen the board outside the Tavern declaring ‘Keith and Lisa welcome you all’. Well, I certainly felt welcome when I called in to interview them for the newsletter. Lisa Kay and Keith Blower – warm, cheerful and loving Charfield – are both from the Midlands but moved to Cheltenham about two years ago where they first worked with Punch (who own the Tavern). When their pub was closed for refurbishment, the area manager asked them to come to the Tavern to take over after a rather disastrous brief stint with the manager who took over from Martin.

They have worked hard to make up the lost ground and in the five months they have been there, they have made huge strides. ‘We're getting really good feedback‘, Lisa smiled happily. ‘We've got our mojo back’. Being old, I'm not entirely sure what ‘mojo‘ is but am ready to believe her. The atmosphere in the pub is entirely different from the last time I was there.

Lisa has been in the trade for 17 years, starting in the kitchen and eventually managing The Billy Wright in Wolverhampton for 6 years. I'm guessing here, but reckon that any of you who are keen on football will remember the legendary Wolves' Captain. The pub was a popular venue for supporters. ‘Win or loose, they were always good’, Lisa recalled fondly. And she hasn't lost touch – a group of old supporters are visiting The Tavern soon and Kenny Hibbitt, an old captain, drinks there regularly.

I asked cautiously about their menus. ‘Fresh meat, fresh veg from local farm shops’ was Lisa's instant response. ‘If I run out, I run out’. Hooray! She clearly loves what she does and enthusiastically told me about plans for daily specials, including liver and onions and shepherd's pie. All freshly cooked. Good news indeed.

Renishaw's employees help to boost lunchtime trade and catering for christenings, parties and wakes is increasing. Mothers' Day was a sell out for them. ‘I don't want to turn anyone away but neither do I want them to have to wait too long.’ A tricky balance. Keith is generally behind the bar but they both help each other out if the need arises and they employ four local youngsters for the kitchen and bar. And then there is Brad, Lisa's son, who has held the fort when they manage to take a few days off and escape to Spain, Lisa's favourite holiday destination, though he won't be there for much longer. He is off to Liverpool soon, though staying in the trade.

We discussed their rivals but they don't see them like that. They have visited the Plough and the Pear Tree. “They're both great’, they agreed. ‘We're all different and there's room for us all’.

When I asked them to tell me about themselves, Keith's response was instant. ‘Raving alchies and nutters!’ he laughed, ‘what else do you want to know?’ I didn't believe him. They both seem to me to have their heads and hearts in the right place and I hope they have a long and happy stay in Charfield.

Out of School Club

Spring finally seems to be on the way and it is nice to see the children being able to play outside. As usual there has been lots going on at the club which continues to be open and very busy every morning and afternoon during term time. This term we have been celebrating St. David's Day and St. Patrick's Day, and the children have enjoyed making (and eating!) Welsh Bara Brith and Irish Soda Bread. Our forthcoming topics include Mardi Gras, Mothers' Day, Malleable Materials and Spring.

As we write this, the Easter holidays are just around the corner and Holiday Club will be open throughout the school holidays to children from within, and outside the village. Our topic will be ‘Easter’, and we have lots of lovely Easter crafts and cooking planned. If you need holiday childcare or if your children would simply like to play in a structured and caring environment, please contact the club for a booking form.

The Committee would also like to say a big thank you to Wotton Accountancy Associates Limited for their excellent service and continued support with the preparation of the club's financial statements. Their assistance is invaluable to our community driven non-profit making organisation.

Don't forget our club is open to all children attending school up to the age of 13. During term time we are open from 07:30 until the start of school and after school until 18:00. During holidays and In Service training days we are open from 07:30 to 18:00. Check out the school website for more details www.charfieldschool.org.uk and follow the links. Please give it a go, we are sure your children will enjoy it and you will be impressed!

St John's Charfield

The total sum raised by the ‘Team St John's’ group during 2016 was over £3600. Huge thanks to all those involved and especially to Rosemarie Berry, whose commitment and enthusiasm have been an inspiration to us all. Rosemarie has now stepped down from her roles on the PCC and Team St John's in preparation for moving to Wiltshire to be with her daughter. Our heartfelt thanks go with her, together with our best wishes for this new phase of her life. I'd also like to thank Alison, Chris, Russell, Ben and all the team who made the March Jumble Sale such a success, raising over £900 for church funds.

We have to raise a substantial amount of money to pay for our share of the clergy costs and for day-to-day expenses along with probably at least £20,000 per year for repairs and improvements to the church, so we need this support and it really is much appreciated.

We now know who is going to come to the benefice to replace Chris Mason as Associate Priest: Rev'd Rick Williams, who is coming from Salisbury. He and his wife, Mary Frost, are due to arrive on 16 May and his licensing service will be at St John's on 21 May at 10.30. Everyone is welcome to join us for the service and for refreshments afterwards.

We recently held an Away Day for all the five churches in the benefice to plan for the next few years in light of Bishop Rachel's LIFE (Leadership, Inspiration, Faith, Engagement) vision. More about that when the follow-up work is complete.

As I'm writing this, we're well into Lent. Lent lunches are every Wednesday from 12.45–2pm in church and money raised is being donated to our cause for the first part of the year: Longfields (formerly Cotswold Care). Palm Sunday is on 9 April with our usual 9.30 service. On Good Friday we have our Walk of Witness jointly with the Congregational Chapel, leaving St John's at 9.30 and ending at St James's with coffee and hot cross buns. We then have a service of reflection for the last hour at St John's from 2–3pm. The Easter Sunday service, celebrating Christ's resurrection – and therefore the most joyful of our special days – will be at 9.30 on 16 April, with refreshments and an Easter Egg hunt afterwards.

Ascension Day will be on Thursday 25 May and there will be a communion service at 7am at Wickwar, followed by breakfast at the Rectory. Pentecost (Whit Sunday) follows of course on 4 June, for which we will hold our usual 9.30 service. The annual St James's Day service up at the old St James's church will be on 30 July at 10.30, and we hope to follow this with a barbecue, so watch out for further details.

Going on to secular activities, the plant sale will take place on 20 May. Cream teas will be on 11 June and 13 August. We'll have a stall at the village fete on 29 July and you might want to note in your diary that the Christmas Fair will be on Friday 24 November.

Some of you reading this will be people who've moved into the village as part of the new development. We're a very welcoming church, happy to see people of all ages at services, and available to help and support outside of church if needed. Babies and young children (and adults for that matter) are always welcome for baptism, and there is a children's play area in church which you are welcome to use at any time. The church is open from about 9–5 every day.

For details of regular services, see our ad in this issue. To contact the clergy, call Rev'd David Russell on 01454 29xxxx or email xxxx @ gmail.com

Wotton Arts Festival 2017 – April 22nd – May 7th

The theme for this year's Festival is nostalgia for the 60s.

This theme is reflected in several events. You can dine in 60s style, have those 60s items you have been hoarding valued, hear a talk on the Swinging Sixties and enjoy the musical talent of Wotton's young people singing songs from the 60s and 70s.

New for this year are the Wotton Art and Garden Trail organised by Under the Edge Arts, and a photography competition and exhibition. The programme also includes the usual Festival favourites.

Thornbury Arts Festival

Severn Vale Art Trail 28th April to 7th of May 2017.

Examples of the artists' work are exhibited in Thornbury Town Hall. This will include work contributed by local schools. Please put these dates in your diary.

The free Exhibition in the Town Hall will be from Friday 5th to Saturday 13th May, 10.00–4.00 in festival week.

• The trail begins on Friday April 28th and finishes on Sunday May 7th.
• The Thornbury Arts Festival takes place from the Friday 5th to Sunday the 13th of May after the trail.

Eighteen lucky new artists are joining the trail in our 12th year. Several are painters, others work with ceramics, textiles or glass. To visit them in their own homes and studios is fascinating, reminding us of the great talent that exists locally behind closed doors. Don't be shy! They will be so disappointed if you don't come!

In addition to those who hosted us last year we have two more shared venues. They are in the northern part of the trail at St Mary's Church in Berkeley and at Kingshill House in Dursley. Many of the Thornbury artists may be visited by following a walking trail throughout the town – a treasure trail indeed!

Incorporated into a month's exhibition, Trish Claridge, superb portrait painter, will be exhibiting during the trail at the Castle School's Octagon Gallery, leaving her Wotton-under-Edge studio to exhibit in Thornbury. Mitra McQuilton, amazing “threadpainter”, returns this year to show in her studio at Charfield. Also in Charfield in a new studio venue are Karen Schwamm, fine textile and ceramics artist, together with photographer Sarah Martin. Ceramicist Liz Armstrong now has three more artists in Charfield to keep her company. Regular visitors will look forward to seeing the work of many artists loyal to the trail – 63 have been accepted altogether!
