Hi dg,

George's marriage cert to Hester Teagle names his father as John. His second marriage to Emily Kendall also shows his father as John. Neither state that John is deceased, but his wife Ann obviously named him as deceased in the 1841 census (which of course may not be the case). We have the marriage record of John Grimes and Anne Stevens (George's mother). The confusing part is where George's parents are listed as George and Anne in the parish register record of George's birth. That is the only time he is listed as George.

We also have birth records showing George's sibling's parents as John and Anne.

Anne's death cert names her as widow of John Grimes.

Anne Stevens was born in Kingswood in 1796. We have found that some Gainers in Kingswood used the alias of Grimes. There is a John Gainer born 1799 in Kingswood whose father is "Thomas Gainer alias Grimes". Could it be John Gainer alias Grimes who married Anne? Another avenue to follow!! smile

SA, The 1841 census of Ann Grimes has her described as a widow but the word widow has a line through it as if to just cross it out. I can find no other instance of this from the same enumerator on the word widow but will keep looking. Other marks used by him are more like slashes. As you know John could have just done a runner as so many did. As the only fly in this ointment is George's baptism the question is have you seen the original? The Morman transcription may have been made in error. DG.

starving artist , your search seems all to familier with mine , --im searching for a George Clarke with a fathers name of Robert , but along the way one of georges children says georges name is john joseph Clarke ---talk about getting everyone confused , the only George Clarke with a father of Robert Clarke is the son of Robert Clarke and sarah croome, now they had several children and one of them was called George , born 1831 ? however I have a record of a George Clarke being burnt to death in 1838 aged 7, I need to find the names of that poor little boys parents ,to see if they were Robert and sarah ---if they weren't ,then after 5 years I think I may have MY GEORGE , if they were then its back to searching ,

to add to my above post , George joined the army in 1853 and he said he came from wotton under edge ---along the way he called his first child George eli, which makes me more convinced he belonged to Robert and sarah ,as they had a child called eli also , --does anyone know anything at all about the boy George Clarke who died in 1838 , I have a lovely man who has been helping me look for my family , but its good to ask around as you never know who has tales passed around their familys

Sylvia, please accept my apologies for not replying earlier. I have just seen your reply and on the date of it I was 3,700 miles from my home in Bermuda - I was actually researching in Wotton-Under-Edge !!! Anyway my research hasn't turned up much, however I have had a dna test done and have found a close match to a "Croom". I notice you mentioned Sarah Croom so now my research gets a little foggier ....grrrr frown
