Great idea - just what I did this morning smile
Looks like the 'Closed' is more of a soft than a hard 'Close' - although don't tell anyone as it is great walking the dogs with no traffic.
The reason seems to be some landscaping work on The Wall wink

Brilliant! Just the terminology I was unsuccessfully searching for.

This part of Old London Road was originally called Dick Hill. The farm was Dick Farm and there was a field called The Dick. Maps of the time show the shape of the field.........hence the name.
There was a Toll Gate of the same name at the bottom of the hill in 1802. Toll Gates were rented out to the highest bidder and adverts were put in the local papers to achieve the best results. I found the advert in a Gloster Journal printed October 1802 where the bidding took place at the Star Inn WUE. DG.
