Good morning.

Is nostalgia a wistful affection for a period in the past ? In my case it certainly is.

I will not bore you with the story of my life, it not being relevant to my pursuit.

Many (1953) years ago, in my early teenage years I was a boarding school pupil

in beautiful Wotton-under-Edge. The school was The Butts House under Mr Eveleigh.

I would be very grateful for any information you could give me regarding the school's

past history. Thank you very much.

Best wishes,

Robert

This is a new one for me an (ex-Wottonian who was only at Blue Coat School in 1953) and a few others on here. Sorry I can't be of any help.

Perhaps you could contact the Wotton Heritage Centre or Gloucester Records Office to see if they have any more info.

Perhaps you can tell us a bit more about the school and whether it was specialist in any way, number and age range of pupils, and the background of the teacher/s, type of courses and subjects.

Most of us on this forum are likely to have been at the state schools in the locality. Nearest private school to my knowledge was Rose Hill at Alderley.

Even though my dad was one time headmaster (1959ish) at Bear Street I don't ever recall mention of your establishment.

I can tell you quite a bit about William P K Eveleigh if it is of interest or is it just the school you wish to investigate....D.G.

I think the school was last open in the late 1970's. I remember a friend who had a sister who went there. Since then it has become a residential house. I love the fact that the house has 2 ways of getting to it - either via Gloucester Street, or Tabernacle Road - excellent for a quick getaway.

I wish to thank you all for your replies. I will try and answer
each of you as best as I can.

BobsBoy47:

The Butts House I knew was a cramming school. There were only 20/25 of us at best. My particular problem for being there was the HMS Conway entrance examination
which I failed at the first try, my knowledge of logarithms
being the main culprit. And yes, six months later and thanks to Mr Eveleigh I passed. I loved that school and its
congenial atmosphere. Ponies, dogs, the beautiful countryside. Being there was a real privilege.

Yes please, anything regarding William P K Eveleigh is of considerable interest to me. The man I remember had a
glass eye, having been wounded during the war serving
in North Africa.

It was a beautiful property but I can assure you we were
not given the chance of making any getaways

wink
