Hi Im a descendant of Henry Bennett and Margaret West - Are you the same Debbie that I corresponded with a few years ago who lives in Australia??
I live in New Zealand and am a descendant of George West Bennett who married Sarah Youson.
I am visiting WUE next year briefly and would like to know of any locations /gravestones etc that I can visit and photograph.

Here a contact when you arrive in WUE: RE Dr Cordwell reply to me.Those that were in the workhouse would almost certainly not be able to
afford inscribed headstones, unless someone else paid.

Most likely they would have been buried in St Mary's churchyard, although it
would depend on their religion. The parish church burial registers could be
checked. Since you have some precise dates of burial presumably you also
have the location.

I think Terry Luker has looked in to the issue of people currently residing
in Wotton.
I thought the previous information you gave me was that Henry and Margaret were married on 24th March 1812. Ancestry confirms such a marriage at St George, East Stonehouse, Devon. (Your file says St George, East Devon. GLS.ENG.) East Stonehouse is now part of Plymouth.

Free BMD has a Henry Bennett who died in the Dursley Registration District, which includes Wotton, in the 4th quarter of 1850 (vol 11 page 264), which agrees with your October 1850.

Ancestry shows his burial aged 61 was on 28th October 1850 at St Mary’s.

Likewise Margaret Bennett who died in the Dursley Registration District in the 1st quarter of 1862 (vol 6a page 136), which again agrees with your March 1862.

In the 1861 census she was a widow living alone in Synwell aged 71. She was buried at St Mary’s on 19th February 1862.

There are over 10,000 members of GFHS (www.gfhs.org.uk) . None have shown their interests to include Bennett in Wotton-under-Edge. Surprisingly there are no entries at all for Grimes.

Not that I am aware of and there is no area of any size within the churchyard which is devoid of monuments, unlike some. As far as I am aware they do not have a written record of the location of any marked graves prior to my map, apart from a few which are listed as of architectural/historic importance. If they do, it was rather remiss of them not to tell me! The same plots will probably have been used several times over during the centuries the churchyard has existed.
